OK- Ive posted a few times about Louie and his cronic runny stools. It never gets better and some days is way worse and just like water.
If Louie was your puppy what would you be doing to treat this diarhea? I know many breeders on here know little home remedys and such that maybe could help me.
Louie is going on 5 months old and is a maltese. He doesnt act sick and is very playful and eats and never throws up ect. The first time i took him to the vet he said he tested neg for coccida and other things . so said maybe it was colitis? but really didnt tell me what to do about this. I still thought it was coccida so he was treated with albon just in case but never did get better. And again vet tests stool and neg for everything and says he isnt sick so really there isnt anything that can be done, and tells me to give pepto and also i have this one med for diarhea and vomiting in dogs that the vet gave me, (doesnt work) None of these meds work and still has diarhea. He has been on the same food since he was weaned from his mother, royal canie the puppy one- he eats just fine and drinks water - The vet also thought maybe he was getting treats that my other dogs had and it was upsetting his intestinal tract but gosh for 3 months? ( raw hide and pig ears ect)
I have tried rice and boiled burger for 3 days and it really didnt seem to make a differnce.
I cant seem to get this diahrea to go away. He goes potty about 10+ times a day. Every time he eats it does seem it comes right back out the other end. Could this be IBS ? what can and should i be doing? Should i try changing his food? I did buy Nutro dog food as i read on here that some other member was having trouble with her puppy and royal and diahrea and said it ended when she switched dog foods. I was gradually mixing in nutro and my dogs wouldnt eat it. and then reading that royal is a better food then nutro i just stuck with the royal. also the nutro even being small puppy breed is way bigger then the royal and i think its to big for him to eat and hard
I did ask my vet about pumpkin and he said thats way to rich for a puppys stomach. I bought this over the counter diarhea medicine called peticillin i think its called for diarhea in dogs, cats and birds. Give every 4 hours till diahrea clears up. If it doesnt work with in 2-3 days then to contact vet. Ok weve done that and it doesnt help. yes there are days when its bloody mucus and some days its just diahrea,. Like this morning its so watery that he cant even hold it in and hes going all over the house. Just because he cant make it back to the pad to go potty. Its been hard potty training even tho he does do a pretty good job going on the pad but its hard when hes in the kitchen and his potty pad is in the dinning room for him to make it, i do have a few pads down so he can try to make it to the pads .
So if anyone knows what they would do and maybe i could try it and see if it works. I would love to get this under control so i can take him out to socialize. and again being his stomach is so upset the vet hasnt giving him his last set of shots due to him wanting to figure out whats going on but all i seem to do is spend money at the vet and leaving with knowing nothing more then what i came in with. also what about low residue food? Is there any other brand then iams? Im not wanting to feed him that it was on the recall list- I still do have cans of the low residue food when Daisy was on it 8 months ago which was in the recall and plan on taking back to petsmart for refund.
Please give me something to go on and something i can do and see if it works. feeding something differnt/ meds? somehting i should be telling my vet to do?
should i take him off all food and just do the rice and burger? He does kinda get sick of it after the first day,lol he scarfs it down the first few bowls and then isnt interested and the other dogs eat it..lol
No treats at all? which i hardly do give but when hes went potty and the other dogs get treats and he knows he should be getting one its hard not to.
please give me a step by step on what i should do. if Louie was your puppy how wouold you handle this? sorry so long i just really need to do something, anything, it breaks my heart to see him going threw this with out any knowlegde of what i can do to help him. Theresa
I'd say cut all the edible treats out to rule out the possibility of him getting treats he's not supposed to. Cut them out for all the dogs, they'll survive for a week or two. And change dog foods for your little guy.
My akita never adjusted to Canidae dog food, she had runny stool for more than 2 months before I finally broke down to a cheaper and lower quality dog food. It wasnt' as quality, but the diarrhea cleared up instantly. Its possible that theres some ingredient in the food that doesn't agree with your dog's digestive system so why not try changing to another food (and knowing that whatever is wrong isn't being influenced by treats) for a few weeks.
Pig ears are very high in fat, and this can give dogs the runs (think of it working like a gut lube).

Hello and thanks for the replys. The vet did say he had more bacteria then he was suppose to have and put him on a antibotic months ago but didnt seem to be the problem when tested again. My vet really hadnt done much testing at all that isnt tested threw a stool sample.
I have picked up all pig ears and raw hide months ago to see if this was the cause and it never seemed to make a differnce. But i guess i should try anther dog food for Louie. I did buy the Nutro but Louie didnt seem to care for it and i was putting a little in with his normal food. I thought maybe the nutro was bigger and he didnt like that because he is so small?
Pope, please find out about that dog food for me, Im willing to try ANYTHING and maybe i can get his diahrea under control since my vet doesnt seem to help much. Should i stick with the colitis? this is what my vet said it was when i first took him and gave me the information sheet on colitis? His dieahrea is very watery today again and i just defrosted sirlon hamburger to boil and give him rice and burger and try that and not give him any dog food only the rice and burger. Should i keep giving him pepto? and this new peticillin i got at petsmart even if it doesnt help at all? it just runs threw him?
He is gaining weight he was under 2 pounds when i got him and now hes 3.8 pounds so thats good. So should i take away the royal dog food completly and just switch over to the nutro? what other dog food would anyone sujest? does any brand make a dog food for sensitive stomachs? low residue? i know the makers of iams makes a low residue canned dog. Should i be looking for items like this for him? I guess i dont know to much about colitis and i ahve read alittle bit on line but i need to read more to figure out home remedies that will work for him. He doesnt sleep thew the night hes up and down all night becasue he has to poop about 2-4 times a night but will hold his pee thre the night. HIs little bottom is very sore and i do have to give him warm baths to clean him up i mostly only bath his bottom because he hates water ..lol thanks again for the help. Theresa
I would have him checked for worms, again. Alot of times when dogs have worms, just because they have a fecal done.. and it doesn't show anything, doesn't necessarily mean there isn't. Sometimes they pass the cysts, sometimes they don't. So you can't rely on ONE fecal. MY dog had mucous/blood once, and it turned out she had worms. I would have him checked again. :)
I just emailed him asking him with the link to this thread, if I do not get an answer soon, I will get on the phone with my sister in law (which is probably my best bet for in depth info, but I could be wrong) lol
Okay, at least the vet has put a name to his condition. Is he doing anything to help manage the colitis? I know the food for my brothers dog is expensive but very worth it. They went through exactly what you are before this food. His dog is a boxer, so it costs more to feed her than it would Louie. As soon as I hear something, I will let you know.
I know I have said it before, but you guys need a new vet!

Also since this is an ongoing thing, you may also want to consider doing a chem panel 12 or a CBC on him, to make sure that his blood levels and body chemical levels are around normal. Unfortunately as yoou've never had one done there won't be a base line, but if anything stands out as overly high, you'll know. The chem panel and CBC will run you about $90-120 all together, I am betting.
I would try changing to a completely new dog food, like one of the potato duck dog foods, or something like that before I'd get the CBC and Chem panel done, personally. (Mostly cause it's quicker and easier). It doesn't sound like you've done any long term dog food change to see if it's a food thing. Pick a good quality food, feed him that and nothing else and see if there's any improvements.

Got Louie on rice and boiled burger , well try this again, took away all royal puppy food and on him like a hawk making sure he isnt finding any of Daisys hiddin treasures..lol (she hides treats everywhere) Im going to try to get Louie a appt today after work so i can see if the vet will do anything about this colitis and give me something i can work with. a feeding program or anything.
Im thinking of revisiting my old vet the one i went to before going to banfeild and see if i can get anywhere with the old vet.
Ive been up and down all night with Louie crying because his ear is bothering him again. I did put some meds in there that i had from last time and it didnt seem to work, He does have ALOT of hair in his ears but im to scared to pull the hair out. Im hoping the vet will do this for me and not just show me how because i cant just pull his hair out. Poor little guy its always something.
Pope if you find otu about this food please let me know. I dont care about cost im willing to do what ever i have to so Louie gets better and i can deal with this colitis.
Should i just keep feeding him the rice and burger for how long tho? Seemed tho last night he wasnt up and down all night pooping, he did once but thats good for him. Maybe the rice is working? but i did try this before but again im on him with making sure he gets no treats and anything he isnt suppose to have. im sure its just a delayed reaction and it will all start back up- Im hoping to get a appt today tho and im debating on going to the other vet but should i stay with the vet that has been helping me with Louie isntead of starting over? But aghain im getting no where with banfeild and they say im a hypro conctrate (sp) thats what they told my hubby when he took him and he kept calling me and i was calling him telling him not to leave untill they find out whats wrong with him and insisting on giving us albon for coccida. now thats pretty rude if you ask me. Im just trying to find out whats wrong iwth my dog, and the vet seems to busy to even care to find out whats wrong. UGHHH
Yeah, I would change the food. since he has been tested for all sorts of things. Could be something simple like a food change. Natural Balance allergy formula may be good for him, the venison and rice or duck and potatoe. One protien source. they are an all stages food. From pup to adult. I have a friend that changed to one of these foods, and her dog no longer get ear problems.
Whoever said you can't buy happiness, must have never owned a dog!!!!!!!!!!!
Has he been tested for worms? Our first dog had terribly runny stools and blood in them. I kept panicking and calling the vet almost everyday. He said the same things, watch the treats, the food, etc. Finally I insisted enough and he tested for worms. She had roundworms and while the vet said she was too young to actually see adult worms in her stool, after treatment I did see a ton of spagetti like worms flow out of her lil ummm you know. She has never had runny stools or blood in them since.
I understand that it is sometimes difficult to catch them in the stool sample, so maybe you could try an over the counter parasite remedy just in case. I know there are a few different de-worming products you can get at feed stores.
Like Minniyar, my pup didn't do well at all on the high-end foods - constant diarrhea - I had it stuck in my head that I wasn't going to feed her crap food - well, after 2 months of no luck with the "excellent" food, I went out and bought a slightly-less-then-excellent food. Instant success! Some dogs just can't handle the richness of really well made foods. I suggest changing the food first - it might save you lots of hassles and frustration (and money) at the vets. Good luck
I think I might be looking for a new vet. I think what Journey said makes alot of sense. I would think with it going on this long and you have tried everything you know to do that it might very well be worms. That is a little baby and I would be careful of hypoglemcia too. Hope he gets better. I think the vet should have already checked for worms and did more testing than what he has done.
If this was my puppy, I would do the following. I would fast him for 24 hours, with access to water at all times. I would make an appt. with a different vet, and start from scratch, ruling out all parasites, and then starting on underlying disease conditions. In the mean time, I would feed him brown rice, hamburger or chicken, (whichever agrees with him the most) and mixed vegetables. I would start out with very small frequent portions, and I would also add a probiotic tablet, such as acidophillus, or lactobactillus, or just plain unsweetened yoghurt, with his food.I would'nt deviate from this, at all, no treats, no other food, until the vet comes up with an answer. Just my opinion, and hope it helps.
I definitely agree with everything Pen just wrote. Start completely over and I would go so far as not only finding a new vet, but find a vet that is a very good clinician and works internal medicine. That may be a specialty vet in your area. Stop feeding absolutely everything other then what Pen said. Dannon plain yogurt with give you what she is describing with the brown rice and beef or chicken. Start from total scratch, back to square one with a new vet. I would also get a copy of all medical records to take with you. You do not need to give your current vet a reason, just ask for copies to have on hand, leave it at that.
Lady you need a new vet. If you had a sick child and the pediatrician didn't treat their illness you would not hesitate to change doctors. You need to give your pup some kaopectate instead of pepto bismol. You are not feeding canned food are you? Dry food only and lower your protein content to 21%. No royal canin and NO nutro. I can't feed either of these to my Maltese because they don't digest it...and I am a breeder. Propac is what I use but good ol' Purina Puppy Chow is not bad feed. The only treats that my Maltese tolerate is Iams puppy biscuits (I break them into small pieces) As long as your pup has its teeth it can chew any size feed...I have seen 8 wk old Maltese pups chew feed the size of a Cheerio. Puppy feed is designed to crumble when they bite into it. You also need to worm this pup...every two weeks for at least a month.
