Hey everyone. I have 2 new Persian cats that I took from a lady who is getting ill and can no longer care for them. The male, Feisty, is 2 1/2 years old and the female, Fancy, is 1 1/2 years. When they first arrived, they both hid for about a day, not wanting anyone to really touch them. Today, the male finally ate something throughout the night, and he'll sometimes come to me when I reach out my hand, so he's getting better. The female however, is just hiding under my couch, and doesn't seem to want to eat or potty, or anything. My question is: Is there anything I could do to help break her out of her shell? I know neither cat had ever been out of their previous home since they were kittens, so this really is a big change. But it's been 2 days now, and I'm getting just a little worried. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
whitney, just leave them, they could take a couple of weeks to become used to each other, and to the new surroundings. They will come out at night and explore, slowly, and then you'll slowly see them out more in the day, usually sleeping. When you do get the chance, make a fuss of them, other than that, just ignore them, other than having their food, water and cat box always available. They'll come round.
Having only two days pass is no big deal - not to the cat anyway! I understand how frustrating it can be - but try to be patient. Like Pen stated, just make sure that food, water and litter box is always available, and leave them alone. They'll come around when they're good and ready...you can't make a cat love you - but show them that you're there to serve their every need and they'll eventually grace you with their presence! LOL
Here is my suggestion if you want to win over the big babies, Cat food. (vigorous shaking of dry food or opening of a wet food can) Or cat treats. Crunchy on the outside chewy in the center and stinky. Hand feeding them chicken would do too...
Then you could sneak in some petting while they figure out your okay and your place is up to their cat standards.
