My three year old Pit bull is a 7 weeks one day pregnant but won't eat the puppy food and won't let me take her temperature- she starts shaking uncontrollably. I looked up birthing and the way to know that she is about to give birth is by a temperature drop. I also read that she should be on puppy food from 5 weeks in her pregnancy. I am a first time breeder and my mom only bred cats, so she isn't much help she just waited til they came and never changed their deit until they were nursing. I have my birthing kit ready, but all she does is sleep in her crate, and eat a little. She does drink and go to the bathroom. I am also worried that she will give birth in her crate and not the whelping box I am in the works of making advailible to her. What should I do?
I dont know the length of pregnancy for dogs is but it sounds like she is feeling the pregnancy. She is just getting the feeling of it and probably uncomfortable. Not sure though, i dont breed, but Im sure other people on here would be more than happy to help. Good Luck!
Temperture drop is not always an accurate way to tell of impending whelping. Get a book on whelping and read it cover to cover. There is a sticky posted here on whelping which has lots of good information. Seems you are too early for temp taking anyway. She still has 10-14 days left before the pups should arrive. And from your other thread, I would ask for a $75 adoption fee and make a written contract to take the pups back if they do not work out with the new owner and that they must spay or neuter. And then make an appointment for your female to be spayed 2 weeks after the pups are weaned. So there are no more opps litters.

First of all Windy not all dogs should be spayed or nueterd. Purbreed or regesterd dogs you don't have to spay/nueter them, if you did it to all dogs there would be no more dogs left. Your pit bull that is normal for not eating so much close to the due date. And maby in the last few days take away the crate so that she gets used to welping box. She's got about 10 days left. There total pregnacy is 63 days, my dog had her pups on exatly the 63rd day. The temperature is not always that important.
MrHickman I think Windy's post sounded very good. They are trying to help th OP out who seems to appreciate the advise.
You should spay/neuter all pets to prevent certain health problems and accidental litters. Whether they are mutts or purebreeds. Any responsible breeder requires this of the PUREBRED REGISTERED pups they sell to pet homes. If you spay/neuter pet quality dogs there are still plenty of breeding quality dogs to chose from.
Windy didn't say alter all dogs anywhere in the post. These are also lab/pits, not purebreed. Plenty of purebreeds with excellent lineage are in pet homes and spay/neutered.
The Rottie male that just came into the shelter where my Aunts fiance works was neutered, he is purebred and registered. No reason to breed pet quality dogs.
Have you ever gotten a dog from a pet store? they are sick, and they aren't as smart or heathly as breeder bought dogs. I should know both my dogs were from breeders at one point and we have a friend with pugs that 2 are store bought and two are bred and the bred ones are healthier so don't knock breeding pet qaulity dogs!
Dogs in pet stores quite honestly mostly come from people's PETS and other substandard breeding stock and puppy mills. They are not show or working dogs, not dogs who are health tested and certainly do not come from reputable breeders who care about the breed. The majority of pet store puppies are not papered through 'real' registries either. They are papered through ones designed to help make puppy mills and BYBs $$$$.
So you can't compare those pups or ones or the run of the mill pet quality dog being bred to Breeders who know what they are doing and do breedings for the right reasons. That is like apples and oranges so to speak
People who are breeding substandard dogs should not be breeding with all the mixes and purebreds alike that die in shelters because their owners just wanted to have a litter
In a perfect world all puppies and dogs would have homes. In reality they don't and it gets worse each year. Attitudes that it is OK to breed just any old dog because you can is a big part of it IMO
one litter here one liter there and so on and so on and you end up with millions of unwanted pets

LOL Hell No I haven't bought a dog from a pet store. They come from puppy mills and often times are not purebred and usually have papers through some crap registry and are way over priced. No one here ever said to get a pup from a pet store.
I have healthy dogs from breeders too. What is your point? Who in their right mind would seek a healthy dog at a pet store? Obviously a breeder would be selective in breeding. Breeders don't breed pet quality dogs together, they produce pet quality dogs in their litters. There is nothing wrong with getting a pet quality dog from a breeder. Otherwise what would happen to those dogs?
I had a dog from pet quality parents. How good or bad the pup turns out will depend on what makes that certain dog pet quality. A show fault or a health issue, unknown lineage which can really bite you in the butt.
People who usually breed pet quality dogs together don't know the breed standard or breeds traits, don't know their dogs pedigrees, what the bloodline produces, anything about the dogs in the pedigrees nor are they aware of the dogs health issues. So they end up producing worse dogs. My dog had health and temperament issues her whole short 6yrs of life. I guess I should be thanking that pet quality breeder since my dog lived a whole 6yrs instead of dying in 6 days like some pet shop puppies.
Since breeding pet quality dogs together more often then not produces crappy dogs to some degree or another I will knock it. There is no purpose in breeding poor to sub quality dogs that I can see, no benefits.
