I just posted this in the "general" area but realized its probably more appropriate here...so anyway...My maltese is pregnant but im not sure how far along, she is anywhere from 46-52 days now. well, last night i felt puppies moving, it was very faint though like little light taps against my hand and if you look real hard you can see little quick kicks poking out of her belly, but nothing real drastic. so..i'm wondering if this can help me narrow down her due date some, does anyone have a good idea of how far along she is based on this? How far along do they have to be to feel these kind of movements (whats the first day you can feel that)?
Kay, no you can not base whelp on what you are feeling. Whelp is technically 63 days from the day she had a Ph surge. This could have been just before or just after she actually conceived. Basically, 63 days from the date she got prego is what you need to go by. However, dogs can whelp day 59, 60, 61 62. The information you are providing is a 6 day difference, that's huge in terms of a canine pregnancy. I strongly recommend seeing a vet who has experience with pregnancies and have an ultrasound or x ray done. An x ray however I would not do until 1 week from whelp (birth). In your case, be set up and ready no matter what based on the information provided and where you think she is. The kicking you feel is normal just as it is with humans however that is not going to tell you how far she is other then she's far enough the pups are developed and moving so she is nearing the end of gestation. Questions, please ask.
I have a vet appt. on tues. for xrays, do you think he'll be able to tell more exact how far along she is from them, she will be 49-55 days then. I'm just trying to figure out if i have 1 week left or 2 so I can be prepared. Everything I'm finding on movement is pretty much saying that once they are moving there is about 1 week left, another thing said fetal movement would be easy to detect days 50-57, so does that mean that she is at least 50? Im just not sure how accurate this stuff is, like what if they mean big time movement and not the little kicks Im feeling. AAAHHH...this sucks, why cant she just tell me how far she is LOL.
OH, i just thought of another question for you :) sometimes when shes laying on her back her tummy gets real tight looking and you can see the puppies (look like eggs) bulging out, like her stomach is forming around them real tight. what is going on w/that? are those like fake contractions or what? Is this normal? Also, she doesnt seem to mind at all when this happens, she doesnt even flinch.
Movement does NOT mean 1 week from gestation. I assure you of that. I have had pups move in a girl 10-14 days from whelp. Generally speaking however 2 weeks out is early for lot's of movement. Movement does suggest completely developed puppies closer to when whelp will take place. As I have tried to explain the ONLY way you would know approx where she is if you have the date she tied and got prego. Right now you have a 6 day difference and unfortunately there is no way I can tell you exactly where she is. IF your vet has really good experience with pregnant dogs and routinely works with this, he/she will be able to give you a much better idea after the x ray or sonogram is done. If they are moving that much, it would not surprise me if she is closer to whelp then you think, or closer to day 55 when you take her for the x ray. Until then, I would just be set up and ready.
There is no such thing as a "fake contraction". When a bitch whelps and is in labor having contractions, you know. It's clear as day. What you are describing is a change of positioning and nothing more. Just prior to whelp the puppies will move further back.
Do you know what to do? are you set up? Supplies etc... There is a good sticky with what you need to get as far as supplies. I'm assuming this was not a planned breeding and you are not familiar with whelp and pregnancy? Here is the link
I am prepared, I have everything I could possibly need, the whelping box has been set up for 2 weeks, and I have researched and read everything I could find online, and also 2 different books (cover to cover 3 times each already) by 2 different DMV's, I have also had very close contact w/ my vet the whole time. I feel like I am very well educated on the subject and when the time comes I will be more than ready, there are just some things that aren't "clearly" defined "anywhere" and I dont want to bother my vet with a unimportant phone call when I will see him in a few days, I just wanted other people's experiences, what they noticed with their dogs.
very cool Kay, nice job. Anything else just ask, there are numerous around here that have excellent whelp experience and would be happy to help you. Let us know how the x ray goes and what the vet says on Tuesday. Good Luck!!
