I am wanting to start a small business (I am only 14 and it will be about 1 or 2 yrs until I would start this business); the business is breeding dogs. I need help on deciding a purebred dog to purchase.
You sound like you are very mature and have very good intentions on starting a business in a few years! That's great! BUT there is allot more too it....You are young and have time to think of what business would be profitable. Plus all of the startup costs/supplies etc..
Income from Breeding dogs...is not really a hobby ... if there is money involved then it is self employment,as the IRS would see it! But also is dog walking, baby sitting and selling lemondade or avon etc.
If you really desire to go into breeding, my advise would be to finish high school and then go to college in the veterinarian field! This way you will have all of your resources in animal care etc! :) Plus you might consider that option as a Side Business/Self employment down the road. If your still interested at that time and point in your life!
You sound like you love animals and also would also like to make an income..so that field, Veterinarian, should really work out great for you!
Good luck in school/college, there are allot of grants/scholarships out there! You are young and have allot of time to really deside what to do in the future!
1st Volunteer or get involved at you local animal shelter... may help you get a better perspective on how many unwanted dogs/cats there actually are.
Next, if you are still set on breeding then go to a few dog shows. See how much hard work these owners put into bettering there particular breed. Ask them questions about how many hours they spend on training, vet trips, & also what they put into the dogs financially. Ask them what being a responsible breeder entails. Find out if they breed for show or service.
If you have an interest in dogs you may find that instead of becomming a breeder you may want to become a vetrinarian or even a vet tech.
I agree with the others that this is not a good business to try. Please volunteer at a shelter and see how many pets people drop off on any given day. Some of the dogs are mixed breed as well as purebred.
The best thing you could ever do for your pet is to spay or neuter it. Breeding is a serious thing and should be left to those who want to better the breed and not make money.
I was told long ago, if it eats and poops you can not make money on it. Breeding dogs is a serious commitment and is not done for profit. Health screenings for breeding prospects is costly as well as the day to day care and maintence of any dog. Try getting a summer job with a professional dog hander or at a well established show/preformance breeding kennel. It is a lot of hard work and long tiresome hours.
