This topic still pertains to the other topic i posted about Louie being sick due to these chicken chip treats i gave him-
He wasnt running a fever at the vets and wasnt throwing up untill we were at the vets, Louie threw up all the way home and for a few hours when we got home- I fed him rice and burger about 11 pm the other night and he scarfed it down- didnt throw up-
fed him again in the morning and he again ate a good portion but still wasnt back to his normal self-
Yesterday morning he seemed fine , still not himself but getting better and early afternoon he started shivering like he was cold- and just doesnt look well.
I wrap him in a blanket to keep him warm, even tho its warm in the house,
Does this mean he has a fever?? How can i tell? the vet does the rectal temp thing but i dont know if i have the skill for that..lol
He did go poop yesterday only once it was normal- but he hasnt went anymore- which is not normal for him. Is the rice and burger bounding him up?
or could it be the chicken chips blocking the intestine?
My poor Louie just doesnt look good and isnt eating again. He did eat maybe 3 table spoons of the rice and burger this morning- way differnt from the other morning.
what can i do to bring down a fever? any meds?
The vets is closed today of coarse and if it does turn into a emergency i will be calling and bringing my little guy in-
Louie is a 4.2 pound maltese and hes about 8 months old.
He isnt drinking much if any- i did buy pedilite but he wont drink that crap and i dont blame him i tasted it and its pretty gross-
Is this just part of the upset belly over the treat thing? or is something else very wrong?
Him shivering and shaking really bothers me and i think something is wrong- of coarse he feels warm but i was told you cant go by that.
should i not be keeping him wrapped in his blanket?
he just lays on his bed pillow and isnt playful and his little eyes look very sad, But he is responsive and will walk to me and go out to go pee and runs back to the house
Please anyone know what i can do to get Louie threw the day untill the vets open? anything i should feed him that would be better then the rice and burger??
Im very worried and dont know what to do. he hasnt thrown up tho since the vets on thursday is when we went.
no diarhea - he poop was normal maybe a little harder then normal but thats all hes went-
please help

How to Tell if Your Dog is Running a Fever
There is not a good way, unless they are running a VERY high fever, and your best bet is to feel their ears. Touching the nose or the fur is not a good way to tell. If you really want to know, take his temperature rectally. A normal dog temperature is 100.0-102.0. Because they are naturally warmer than us, dogs usually feel like they are running a fever, but in fact, may be normal. I have clients come in every day and tell me they think their dog is running a fever because they felt the dog or the dog's nose and it was warm, but it was actually normal.

So, my advice, don't listen to all the myths and take his temperature with a thermometer, rectally. That way you will get an accurate answer. Good Luck.

The best way to find out if your dog is running a fever is take it's temp rectally. I never even bother to pick up the phone to call the vet without doing this first, because I know that will be the first question out of there mouth. Did not matter if I was calling about a horse, a dog or a cat. Same question.

If you are concerned about him getting enough fluids you can try offering him some canned chicken or beef broth (or make him some from scratch). Try to find one without a bunch of additives. I agree with the others that the only sure way to check a dog's temp. is with the rectal thermometer. It isn't as scary as it looks, you only need the tip in, not the whole thing to register the temp. correctly.

I know what you mean the pedialite is gross but they come in popsicle form & my girl had a fever and she loved them she thought it was a treat!

I hope you have taken Louie back to the vets office. I would still be very concerned with a blockage. He needs to have an X-ray or ultra sound done. Even still sometimes blockages do not show up. They have to resort to exploritory surgery to find it. This is not something to mess around with. You need to seek help from your vet.

I have been in contact with my vet, He seems to think i should give this a few days and then have him rechecked which was the other day and he is starting to be himself a little more and now he is going poop,
And he is eating but still he doesnt look all that great, Im still worried,'
He has a 4 hour appt on friday to do blood work and all these tests, so maybe then they will figure out what is going on,
He is more playful and more himself but still his tail is down between his legs and he seems to walk funny.
I can tell he has lost weight.
He is up to date on all shots and i pray that he is going to be ok.
Of coarse the vet did tell me if i didnt think he could wait untill friday to call and they would try to sqeeze him in , but now with him eating and he isnt shivering anymore and he is eating, but again he just doesnt act the same.
Is there a doggie flu?
It breaks my heart to see Louie like this but some days he seems to be pulling out of it and is very playful with Daisy and Bentley and the cats, but then a few hours later he just lays around.
So friday he will be going on and having all that stuff done , I dont like that it takes 4 hours and is a drop off, I hate leaving him when he isnt feeling well ,
But the vet thinks this is needed and to go over everything,

You really can't know what it is without the vet seeing him. My Daisy once ate a plum pit and blocked her colon, she must have been in agonizing pain but I waited 48 hours to take her in. She was dying. Do not wait. If Daisy shivers now, we go straight to the vet. Shivering is not a good sign. They can't tell us what is wrong, they will roll over for a belly rub even when they are almost dead. Take him in.

Yes dogs can get a form of doggie flu>> I have a pom that had it>> She was sick on her tummy and no energy>. After about two days I did the emergency vet call>> They gave her an IV and told me she had a virus. I dont remember what kind of meds they sent home but it took her about 3 days to be my Happy Little pig that she always is.LOL My husband calls her MONEY BAGS because she has had many trips to the vet!! Broke leg when she was a pup>> Double hernia when she was 2 >> the Doggie flu >>She got into some caffine pills onetime and had to have her tummy pumped!She is 8 now and still a lively as always she Rules the house !! We have 4 other dogs that she puts up with! I am done ramiblin now >> Get your dog to the vet they will make up for it later!! Dog kisses go a long way!
