My dog passed away almost 2 months. The house just doesnt feel the same without a dog around. So I was wondering if you could help me decide on the best breed for me. I have a rather large yard and would exercise the dog every day. I also have a cat and 2 older children live in the house. We sometimes have younger children come over to our house so the dog must be good with children. I live in the tropics so the dog must be able to handle the heat. It can get up to 110F in summer.
Any suggestions would be appreciated and of course we will be looking at our local shelters as well:)
"Good with kids" and "can deal with heat" still leaves alot of breeds in the running.
Here are a couple factors I can think of, along with the extremes that breeds can exhibit:
(1) Grooming requirements? (daily coif <--> wash 'n wear) (2) Size? (toy <--> giant) (3) Activity level? (needs a job <---> needs a couch) (4) Need for people's attention (needy <---> aloof) (5) Watchdog capability (won't bark <---> won't shut up)
I just made those up, so they're not very well thought out, but I hope you get my drift. You're going to need think about some of these factors, and where you'd like a dog to fit on each of these scales.
How much time are you away from the house, during the day? Do you prefer small breeds or large breeds? Do you want a very active dog, or one thats more laid back? Have you tried looking at any of the shelters in your area? Unfortunately there are millions of dogs put to sleep every day; so you may see one there and fall in love with it.
I'd get another Ridgeback if I were you. You already have experience with the breed, they certainly can stand the heat, and the few that I have met seemed like happy family-oriented dogs. I know nothing about how they are with cats, but you had one before, so you would know better than I do.
Hounds are hard for some people to manage, especially a sizeable one like a Ridgeback. I just can't think of another breed that is so suited to hot weather and is so sociable.
Salukis, Basenjis, Xolos, etc. all tolerate heat, but I wouldn't have them around kids or cats.
well i have a westie (west highland terrier or west highland white terrier) and i also have a large yerd (one acre and a 1/4) and wow she loves it but she also has some energy at the end of the day. they get along with kids and also are good most of the time with household pets. LOOK INTO THEM!!! (:
