Hi All, I'm a newbie to these boards, but after reading a bunch of the posts I thought this would be great place to get some tips/suggestions. My hubby and I recently adopted a stray (his arrival in my home is a whole nother story) I just took him in for his first vet visit only to discover he is FIV positive. We have given it some thought and there is no way we could give this gentle giant up, he's with us for good. So I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips/suggestions for living with FIV. I am seeing the vet again in 2 weeks to have him neutered and will be discussing his diganosis with her then. I have tried to do some reading up about FIV online, but to be honest some of sites I found painted such a horrible picture I couldnt read anymore. Any information or websites that anyone could pass along would be great. Also are there any key questions I should be asking the vet? Thanks for you help!
Kudos for taking him in!! You should not bring another cat into the home unles that cat is also FIV positive. It can be transmitted from one cat to another. So don't let this one outside. He can make your neighborhood cats also FIV. His immune system is low, so he can catch colds and such easily. So best bet, keep him indoors, away from other cats, and vaccined regularly. He can live a healthy life, but perhaps shorter than a truly healthy cat. Feed him good food, so he gets the nutrients and vitamins he needs. The vet can recommend one. You have done a true rescue!!!
