Tonight I was doing the belly rubs on my dogs and I noticed Shadow has "dirty specks" all over him. It looks like he rolled in dirt but he didn't. So I gave him a bath and they did not wash off. I thought it was maybe flea dirt, but didn't see any fleas on him and he would really have to have a bunch if there was that much dirt.
My next thought was hot spots. When I was washing him I made him lay down and expose his belly, and I scrubbed them good. They did not come off and a couple of them started to bleed so my next thought was hot spots...
Then when I started to wash his butt, I noticed he has some really small (rice sized) black specks all over his anus. Could he have worms was my next thought.
But then what is the stuff all over his belly, it is around his scrotum area, not on his chest at all. A couple on the insides of his legs. I will be calling the vet first thing Monday morning, as I don't feel this is an emergency because he is eating, drinking and acting like himself. Bad thing is I have to call Monday and then they can get me in the next day to see him.
I really cant think of anything but fleas. Did you try putting him on a white towel, rubbing his fur, and seeing if anything falls off? If it does, see if it moves. Maybe they are biting and making him bleed.
Sounds like a staph infection. My female frenchie had a similar sounding rash on her underbelly and inside her back legs. Our new foster frenchie has a staph infection that he had when he came to us. I have been treating him with cephalexin and bathing him with oxydex shampoo. Both were prescribed by our vet.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.
Riley, I used a wash cloth to try to get the specks off before I bathed him and nothing come off. I was thinking flea dirt and I know that smears and turns like blood when it is wet and wiped on. Nope nothing fell off.
Does a staph infection come across on the rectum too? How do they get a staff infection if it is one? I am going to take pics of the rash today and post it. Poor guy. He is going to the vet asap on Tuesday
