My Puppie has just developed aggression towards other dogs defending any bone that come into the house. She has attacked other dog and in that process of her attack has bitten a family member who broke up the fight. How do I stop this aggression and keep her from doing this ever again????
Ok..now for the rest... #2,#3 and so on... You said he was a puppy... GREAT...time to train and discipline! You see,you can never be for sure that while he was eatting a bone... another dog might come by...even in his own yard..So you'll have to teach the dog from right and wrong. The main thing with a puppy is to ALWAYS make sure you can take something out of it's mouth at ALL times. Start off by giving him a bone.. and then as he is chewing on it... reach down and say "RELEASE".. take it away from him slowly... then pat his head and say good boy... and give it right back... Once you've successfully achieved this step... gradually adding more and more seconds to it... ALways use the word "release" and always pet him and give it back... He will not fear you taking anything out of his mouth or food dish...He'll always know your going to give it back. This way.. if he has a bone he won't fear it being taken away..by anyone/dog. When puppies are very young... they sometimes have to fight over or for food ...mostly if they are all fed out of a shared dish.. so this behavior might be something instowed in him from when he was very very very young... It just needs to be broke with good training. I would advise you to seek a trainer... most pet stores have obedience classes they offer for a small amount and they really really work!!! You would see a BIG difference in him in just a few trips.. Good luck...
Unfortunetly food aggression with people vs dog to dog is different. Food guarding is a natural behavior. Its just not about right or wrong here, and the dog doesn't "Know" right vs wrong. In the wild food guarding would keep him alive, so look at it a bit differently. Does he guard from people in the house, how old is the puppy, give and take exercises are a great exercise to do daily, when it comes to people and bones, but it doesn't work for other dogs.Keep the food and bones up when the chances of another dog comeing in the house are possible. Have special bone times only, exchange the bone for something even better like a hotdog or of equal value when its time to take up the bones.
