I feed Dutch twice a day using the "20 minute, take away" method. Dutch has a habit of beginning to eat by taking three or four kibble in his mouth to his blanket on the floor. He drops them on the blanket and eats them one at a time. When he is finished with the sample he goes back to his bowl and finishes it (eating entirely from the bowl). When he takes it to his blanket and some fall on the floor he will not touch it, he only eats kibble from the blanket or bowl. If kibble falls from bowl onto floor he will also not eat it (ever!). Does anybody else dog do this? Do you have any idea why? I have been told that he might be trying to let the pack leader (me) eat first, or trying to share it, so I have feed him and immediately left out of room only to peer in at him doing the same thing. I have also removed the blanket from the floor of the laundry room which is where I feed him, and he will then drop the "testers" on the floor and not eat them. Is Dutch a little "touched"?
Tito used to do this too when i first got him. He would only take a few peices of food drop then one a little rug and eat them. He wont eat food off the ground near his bowl unless you tell him to. What i started to do was make him work for the food. He learned has has to obey me or he dosnt get it. I would sit with him when he ate and if he started to leave i then told him to come back and finish. now he eats what he can and saves the rest for a snack. He likes to eat 4 times a day but i feed him twice. So he learned if he saves some food then he can have the rest later. So i no longer do the 20 min take away.
My dogs do this all the time. They will do the same thing with a treat, run to their bed, or the couch, or blanket, and take great relish in their treat. Try free feeding him and see if he does the same thing, when I switched to that the dogs did'nt see the fun in running to the blanket with it anymore. They still do it with treats though.
I have one dog that does this everytime he eats, every meal, everyday. They have a never ending supply of food. As in an automatic feeder. Sometimes, I wonder about it. But I've never done anything about it. Never had any problems. I just thought he was weird! LOL!
