Can someone please give me advice on how to stop my puppy from biting? I'm sure at this age, she's probably just trying to play, but she's getting more and more aggressive. She's a 10 wk old golden retreiver and we've had her for about 3 wks now. I have 2 small boys (3 1/2 & 2), and really wanted to get them a puppy, but they are growing more and more afraid of her due to her biting and aggresive behavior.

In talking with a few family members that recommended holding her mouth closed and telling her NO with a stern voice when she bites, but it hasn't done anything and she's actually starting to snarl and get more aggressive when we do it now. She's doing great with potty training and staying in her kennel at night, but we just can't get her to stop bitting.

Awesome 10 weeks old, still lots of time to turn things around. First off I know that lots of parents want to get their kids a pet, but to be honest your kids really are to young to interact with a dog of this temperment(Without full control by parents. The two should never be left to their own devices.
Goldens too can be pushy.
I would never say to an owner to stop their dogs from biteing.
10 weeks is basically a stage where puppies are learning how to use their mouths, if you stop a puppy from learning this, they may hurt someone seriously in the future.
The exercise I am talking about is Bite Inhibition.
get this puppy in a Puppy Kindergarten Class ASAP.
I could explain it further if you wish?
Its your job to keep the puppy confined to one or two rooms only.The children are to young to fend for themselves and are probly teaching the dog that biteing is fun, so separate them.
Never hold a puppies mouth closed or use punishment for a natural behavior, you will casue the dog to defend itself.
And being that it is a dog, he really doesn't know what "No" means or why your saying it.

When she goes to bite distract her with something to bite other than you. Use a nylabone or another toy, and if you have to keep it in your pocket all the time. Get her into
puppy classes ASAP, and don't worry, she's doing what all 10 week old puppies do. Do you have her crate trained, or are you trying to crate train her? That would be a good idea too. Good luck.

I did a ton of research online last night and did learn quite a bit about bite inhibition. Many people seem to recommend puppy classes, but I really have no idea where to start looking? Can you provide any further info on the classes (where to go, cost, how to find out if a trainer is good, etc)?

Talk to your Veterinarian, ask if they recommend any Places in your area.
If your in the US, there is a Dog USA, In Canada we have the Dogs annual, there is a trainers section in the annual I am sure the american one does.
(The Library would probly carry the magazine/or buy from a place that carries magazines)
Most trainers have advertisements and talk about Kindergarten classes, they basically have age classes.
Their techniques should be mentioned, it should be positive techniques, if they say they use corrections they aren't keeping up with the times and educating themselves on behavior.
Corrections are things like pushing, yanking, hitting etc.
Yes there are trainers out there that are still old school and refuse to get continued education on the topics.
I would allow a parent to bring small children to class if the puppies in the class were not to big, so ask they may be to young.
The classes should cover, Off, walking on lead, sit, down,Bite Inhibition, Nothing In Life is for Free,Housetraining to name a few.
They should also do alot with puppy handleing.
Good Instructors would be glad to let yoou sit in on a class, to get a feel for whats going on.
So depending on where you live the internet may have lots of info for your area as well.
4 months the learning curve slows down so get on that now before its to late.

Thanks Sue, I really appreciate you sharing all of your knowledge. What do you think about going thru a pet store like PETCO? I see they advertise classes, but I'm not sure of the quality and a lot of times you get what you pay for if you know what i mean.

Mmm, I'm not familiar with Petco, but its a store right and part of Puppy kindergarten is puppy to puppy socialization, that means free time of lead, you can't do that in the middle of a store.Try a more private Trainer.

Well if you are in Milwaukee there are bound to be Dog Training Schools in that large metro area. I live near Eau Claire and there is a dog school here that teaches obedience, agility and showmanship. So let your fingers do the walking through the yellow pages or speak with your vet's office. I'm sure you will find just the trainer you need. Good luck with your dog.
I like him a lot better than I like most people. To you he's a dog. TO me he's an adopted son who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly. I have no problem with any of these. <

Petco is an ok place, if you are thinking about using them stop in and ask when you can meet the trainer and talk with them. Interview them just like you would a babysitter/teacher for your kids. Ask what the class will cover, how often/how long it meets, and how much it costs. Ask if you can watch another class (we normally see the ones at our Petco weekly in the back of the store in the exercise pen).

Also try searching at http://www.apdt.com/
They will normally bring up a nice selection of trainers in your area, many of whom have websites and such to help narrow the selection before calling. The sooner you get your pup in a class the better.

We had alot of biting issues with our youngest (my husband still does) but bite inhibition worked well for keeping his teeth off of me. If its in your budget contemplate having the trainer you pick out to your home for a private session to address your specific issues as well as puppy classes.
