If EVERYONE on here is sooo worried about all them shelters being over populated then NO ONE...show person, BYB, or whatever, should breed a dog until every homeless dog is adopted out. Otherwise this constant preaching to people interested in breeding about shelter dogs should not be said.
I have worked in rescue my whole life... I have come across exactly TWO show dogs in rescue, siblings who's owner had died and the family didn't know what to do with the little Yorkies beautiful, long coats. As soon as they were in the shelter show dog people scooped them up and brought them into Yorkie rescue... they are now safe and sound.
I simply see many unwanted mixes and many purebreds that are about the quality that you are breeding (and that is to say... very VERY poor quality)
Of course there's no "I" in team... but hey look! There is an "I" in pie :)
If there were no desinger dogs, puppy mills, or puppies being sold in pet stores, that would take away most of our problem. Next people need to let only breeders who are bettering a breed, breed. No cool I have an akc dog lets have pups. Good breeders stand behind their pups, and allow them to come back to their homes no matter what. I breed, but also have rescue/shelter dogs. I love to help the shelter, and make donations, volunteer, etc anytime I can.
I havent read all of this but here is my opinion so far. I agree. If everyone is so worried about the shelters being over fulled with unwanted dogs then stop breeding. That will solve the problem wont it? If everyone just stoped breeding there would be no more dogs to place in shelters and then once all those dogs are gone PURBRED breeders can breed again.
But then again that is better said then done. Also, if people ONLY bred purbred there would be no more $95 mutts to get and some people just looking for a cheap family pet no matter its breed(s) will be out of luck and they will either have to pay hundreds of dallors for one or just give up and go find a cat or something.
I do not believe for a minute that a show dog or an offspring of a show dog never ends up in a shelter or a rescue.....just because you have a waiting list for your puppies and so on does not mean they are guaranteed to have a forever home when you sell them. I also know that if you keep a puppy for show and it does not turn out you do not keep that puppy for the duration of its life, so what happens to those dogs that don't meet your standard for the show ring?? Alls I was trying to say is if you are so worried about these shelters and the over population you have no business breeding either, whether you show or not. The only reason you breed is to get that one or maybe two puppies out of the litter to show....not with the sole intent to create loving pets for people without one. And no I have NOT bred my white mini schnauzer, however in a few years when the time is right I may just do that....would like to have a black and silver to show, so I can enjoy the fun that my mom does in the show ring.
Sweetie, that is probably one of the stupidest statements I have ever heard. So if we stop breeding purebred dogs until all the shelter dogs are gone, how old do you think these purebred dogs would be, when it is time to start breeding again. Probably too old to breed, then it is call extinction.
Any responsible breeder is willing to take back into there home any dog they bred for any reason at anytime. Thats what my contract says.
And I have no idea where you get these prices. I currently have purebred AKC registered pup that I will be giving away to the right home. I have also sold a show prospect pup to a family who was going to give this pup a wonderful home for a whoooping $100.00. So not all breeders are into selling outragious priced pups. To a responsible breeder getting suitable homes is far more important than $$ can ever be. We breed for the love of our breed, not like BYB and Millers who breed for one reason and one reason only.........$$$$$$$$$
He's your friend, your partner, your defender your dog.You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours faithful and true to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to worthy of such devotion
Well, there are those of us who own dogs and actually USE them for what they were bred for. That would be one good reason to buy a specific breed and not adopt from a shelter.
My husband hunts-he wanted a pointer. Know how many times I've seen a brittany at ANY of our local shelters? NONE!!! Never saw a vizsla there, either. Or a weim. If fact, there have been very few purebred dogs at ANY of the 3 shelters in my area. Not saying it doesn't happen-only that it is not NEARLY as common as some people think.
And by the way-that remark about "just give up and find a cat or something" is REALLY irritating. Know how many cats are in shelters?
The average dog is a nicer person than the average person.
You are absolutely right Windy....was a stupid thing to say....they would probably go extinct. Just did'nt come out exactly how I thought it would. Get defensive when I see someone being jumped all over for considering the prospect of breeding. But anyways I never wanted to argue with you....I did my research on you also....found your web page and know that you are talking from experience. All those beautiful dogs you show....and they are being shown in other countries also!! So I understand why you would get defensive if someone wanted to breed and ruin what you have been working towards for all these years.
