Ok I have question. As a nurse I know that humans need to get hernias surgically fixed. Is it the same for a puppy? One of my males has a lil bulge that I think is an umbilical hernia atleast from my exp. its what it looks like. I did put a call into the vet but they dont get in until 2 today. Does anyone know if surgery is needed around how much it would cost? Obviously from those who know me, I am gonna fix it as I rescued prego mom from 4 hrs away. The other 3 pups are doing great and all are starting to wean really well. They all even know to do thier business on papers not where they sleep. I will post more recent pics soon. Any answers would be great, thanks.
An umbilical hernia is definitely fixable, and in the scheme of things, is a more minor surgery. How old is the puppy? I just noticed the pup is a month old. The vet will probably ask you to wait until the puppy is 3 -4 months old, at a guess.
It depends on the severity of the hernia....Larger hernias will need to be surgically fixed... some will close up on their own with help from a belly band. Your pup is young... I would try a band and keep an eye on it. It also couldn't hurt to speak with your vet and see what they suggest.
Depends on the severity of the hernia. I've had more than one close up on it's own. They CAN be inherited - but also can be caused by the mother/dam pulling at the cord while she's severing it (or if a puppy is "stuck" and you help pull it).
Generally, unless it's causing the puppy problems, I've always been told to wait and either fix it at the time of the spay/neuter (so as not to put the puppy under anesthetic multiple times) or fix it around 4-5 months.
Keep in mind, puppies aren't like people. They are born incompletely developed - so they can "heal" a lot of things we wouldn't be able to.
We have a female Frenchie that came to us with an umbilical hernia. The vet told us that it would probably be gone by the time she was six months old, and it was. If it would have ended up requiring surgery, it would only be a minor surgery. The cost to fix had she needed it ? 50 dollars.
If you are a dog and your owner suggests that you wear a sweater, suggest that he wear a tail.
