My 8 mo. old shar-pei/pug mix is trying to lick his butt a bit too frequently. Also, he'll sit down and scoot a couple of inches to itch his butt. I've not noticed anything unusual in his poop or his anal-area. He's been doing this for about a week. Any suggestions?
Some dogs also have a fold of skin round the area under their tail, That can get infected and inflamed, but if you clean it out and dry it well, it clears up quickly.I just noticed your dog is part Pug.If he has a deep fold of skin, underneath his tail, and between his anus, that might be it. Be prepared to find a quantity of dark foul smelling yuck in there. I clean mine with q tips and peroxide, but you can use anything.

My dog does the same thing and someones aid that is a sign of worms so I went and got him checked out for worms and the vet said he had no worms at all. I beleive he said it was caused by fleas or his anal glands.
My puppy is a jug and just exhibited that behavior this morning... of course I freaked out and called the vet thinking he had worms... the vet said that ninety percent of the time it is something else. I made him an appointment for next week... she said as long as he is eating and drinking I shouldn't worry... and he has not displayed that behavior this afternoon. Can anyone give me info on jugs?
Bugsby, check under his tail, and see if he has a deep fold under it, and above the anus. He could be like my dog, and have a bunch of dirt in it..or he may need his anal glands expressed, as was mentioned before.
