Since the first day I got him, Sumo has had a food obsession. ANY food. sometimes things that aren't even food.
If he sees the other cat eating he steals his food, and if there is food on the counter he will eat through layers of plastic to get to it, even chocolate cookies, which scares me! I even got pet insurance for him, because I'm so nervous he is going to eat something that will require surgery or other expensive medical care.
I have used the spray bottle, but he is smart and sneaks around the kitchen to find food, and if he hears or sees us he darts away and hides until we are gone again. In fact, if he gets into something he really likes, the spray bottle has no effect on him and he'll just sit there being sprayed and still eat! I give him top notch food, with dry food available at all times, and I give him a can of wet food every other day. He had his vet visit not that long ago, and everything was fine with him.
is there SOMETHING I can do or change so he isn't so obsessed with eating everything in site?
Here is some info from Petplace.com. If you get a pop up message that seems like you have to join something, just hit the "close" button and you can view the article. The site is free. I always find a lot of helpful tips there.
I feel your pain. My 9 week old kitten ate some yarn bits from a toy Wednesday and I spent Thursday at home watching for her to pass it through her system to be sure she was ok. Luckily the pieces were only an inch long and she seems to have only eaten one. Needless to say the toy it came off of has been thrown out!
