Hello, I noticed yesterday that my 15 month young Shylo would urinate as she usually does at first, but then for the rest of our walks, she would squat as though urinating, but nothing would come out. I took her to the vet tonight. She has a fever of 104 that the vet said not to worry about. he took bloodwork & a urine sample & gave me 375mg of Clavamox for the "infection"( 2 pills a day for 14 days). Tomorrow the urine tests will be in, but I am starting her on the meds tonight. She weighs 51 lbs in case you are wondering. Has anyone else ever had this situation with their baby? If so I would like to hear how this was handled by your vet. Just curious to know the outcome & also if there is anything I can do to prevent it from returning. Thank God for VPI insurance after this $435 bill. Yikes!! I love her & will do anything to make her better. Thanks
My male minpin developed a UTI when he was not quite 3 and was also treated with clavimox, at a much lower dosage of course! My vet and I determined it was due to the DUMB act on my part of switching him over to a poor quality food that he absolutely loved, since I was trying to put some weight on him and he would eat twice as much of that as the good stuff (hey, not many people or dogs don't like to gorge on junk food!). The clavimox did the trick, I have kept him on good quality food ever since and have never had a problem with another UTI.
Hopefully by now your baby is doing better. Sounds like you caught it fairly early like I did. They can become quite serious if left untreated for a long time.
Thanks guys for sharing with me. You are correct about the testing costs! The visit, the blood work & urine tests as well as 14 days ( 28 pills) of the Clavimox ($112) ran me $435. Just a tip, when I returned home, I decided to go on PetMeds.com to see what they charge for the meds. It came to a little over $55. I returned to my vet with this information & they gave me a credit for the cost of the medicine. Not sure if your vets do this, but they do not offer it unless you ask. I do it for my frontline & heartworm medicine as well. They will always match the PetMeds price. Simply print out the cost & take it with you to your vet. Shylo seems to be doing better ( it's been 7 days now) but I still notice her trying to lick at her backside. I just hope this medicine does the trick. I also got into the habit of wiping her with a non scented baby wipe each time we return from a walk.
