I took in a stray who was beat really bad. I cleaned him up gave him medicene and have been taking care of him. He is really a great dog. Someone trained him really well. Where we live it's very cold so I take him in at night. I don't know what happened but this morning when I went to take him outside he got scared and jumped on the table knocking things off. When I went to grab him he turned around and bit me. I have a 1 year old and another one on the way. I don't know what I should do. Should I get rid of him?
I also agree. Take him to the vet, explain what happened and see if he is any help. If he cant see anything bring him home and give him another chance, maybe it was just one of those moments. If it happens again well then...it might be better to just get rid of him.
Oh, I'm sorry about your dog's beating. Well, I have stray too. I would take her/him to the vet and see what problems they got before taking ferther notice of carig etc.. well, I love all dogs. Its just so rude how they treat animals. I hate that!
DogLovers AKD!!!! I like any kind of thing. There's a lot of stuff I enjoy and love, and some likes.
It sounds like you may have a fear biter. That happens when a dog is abused. They start to fear any kind of sudden movement, confinement, or grabbing because in their past it led to pain. Take the dog to a shelter. If it was abused and has attempted to bite you then you should not risk your children's safety. Children are very quick-moving and like to grab at things so the dog might misinterpret that as more abuse about to happen and bite out of fear and what it sees as defending itself.
Personally I would contact a rescue group that has the knowledge on how to properly train such a dog. (Not saying you've done a bad job or dont know what your doing) I've dealt with a fear aggressive dog, and it takes a TON of experience, training, and time, and its not always a happy outcome anyway. I would protect your kids and let someone experienced deal with him.
I am no expert and am working with my own puppy, but animals are extremely perceptive... you said he got scared... what exactly scared him? Maybe a threat you were not even aware of ... my 5lb. pug was freaking out at midnight when I took him out as part of his potty training and there was a coyote in the driveway! He still looks up the driveway when I take him out!
