My mother-in-law has a very sick Golden Retriever. I think he is about 10 years old (human years). She used to have 2 retrievers, but one died from old age. He was very lonely (been at least 3 months now), but was getting better. Now, he is having these symptoms below, but as far as we know he has not eaten anything strange. Any help would be appreciated.
-drools (never has done this before) -won't eat (have tried hamburger and rice) -when he does eat he throws up and has diarrhea -lays around and does not drink much (they leave water out for him) -if he does eat he acts like he has a hard time chewing -took him to the vet and they said he has a virus....gave him antibiotics. They said he might have a tumor, but could not feel anything. -he has lost a lot of weight -he will go outside and eat snow better then anything (live in North Dakota)
How long has the dog been having these symptoms? Is the dog up-to-date on his vaccinations (especially parvo and corona)?
If the vet did not order bloodwork (red and white blood cell count, test liver & pancreas function), ask them to ASAP.
Since you say he is not drinking, did the vet check for dehydration? Make sure they do. The dog may need fluids, also ASAP.
If the dog is not eating you can try a product like Nutri-Cal. It's a nutritional paste that you can use in small amounts. You put on their nose or directly in their mouth, forcing them to eat it. You can usually buy it at a pet store.
Antibiotics do not treat viruses... Although they can treat bacterial infections that occur secondary to a virus.
I don't think there is any harm in trying the antibiotics. However, if you already started them but the dog is not getting better, and your vet is not interested in finding what's really wrong... I would suggest you find a different vet.
I have had this happen a few times after the death of a buddy they were atached to. Try to get him on Tahitian Noni juice only Tahitian. Give him as much as you can get down him. The other animals that went through depression of mine that were all older like this just stopped everything. I don't have to tell you what happened. This has happened to me on 3 occasions in my life. I had animals that were buddies and when one passed well within a few weeks it was not good. Of course they were all up in years usually. It also did not make a difference if it was cat or dog, they were buddies. If you want to talk more email me or go to my website at www.amayers.net my email is there. I do understand the heartbreak when you feel helpless. ttul Marylou
Some of the symptoms you describe sound like dental issues. Is he painful in the abdomen? Have you had xrays done to rule out foreign body?? Liver disease also shares some of these symptoms. Don't wait to long or it may be to late/
