I am a new owner of a Maltese/Bichon Puppy. I have read a few stories and I am a little nervous about the crying during the night and the crate training. My question to those who have walked through this path is....how long does the crying last? I live in apartment dwelling and worry about the crying. I am even considering staying at a friends house for the first few days so I will not drive my neighbors crazy. Am I going over board with this???
My next question is the crate training...I am on vacation for the entire month of Jan. do you think I can get her on track before I return back to work? My fear is that the puppy may revert backwards. I do not want to rush her but I do want her to be able to potty in her crate while I am at work. I can have someone drop by from time to time to check on her but it would not be consistent. Any advice would be helpful...Thanks
Congrats on the new puppy!! The crying generally only lasts a few days to a week. Is the puppy in a crate in your room at night? As for going back to work...the general rule of thumb for potty breaks is they can only hold it as long as their age in months plus an hour. So a 3 month old puppy can only go at most 4 hrs. Some do better than others but a puppy can't go all day in a crate without a bathroom break. One suggestion would be calling a local dog walking service. They can supply puppy visits which consist of two visits a day so the puppy won't go in his/her crate. If you have a friend that can come during the day on certain days you can arrange that with the dog walker to save some money. In lieu of that..a pen with a papered off area also would work but in the long run could make housebreaking a longer process. Personally I have three small Maltese mixes. I both paper trained them and outdoor trained them. By the time they were all between 6-7 months they all stopped using their paper on their own and stictly went outside. I only work part time though and they are never alone for more than 4 hrs a day..I work as a dog walker :)
