Paulo (an 18 month old Standard Poodle) has been doing so well since I adopted him last May. He has learned house manners, as well as very basic leash skills.
His problem is that he has energy to burn. I walk him a couple of times a week, but I walk very slowly and it is just not enough for him. He RUNS around the yard and the dog park, but it is not enough for him.
Yesterday, I threw his stuffed bear up in the air for him to catch and he hit is head on the ceiling.
Would he be good at fly ball? He adores catching things and throwing them up in the air and bouncing balls off of the floor. My neighbor's toddler throws his toys over our fence and Paulo will pick them up and put them back over the fence.
I don't know much about the sport, but I know that it takes speed and agility. Does the trainer have to be in really good shape? I can run short distances if I have to, and I can lift things easily, but I am not in the best shape. Would that matter for fly ball?
The trainer doesnt do much. You stand at the start line and hold your dog, until the other dog passes a line (its like a rally race). You dog has to go over 4? jumps then hit the springbox at the end for the ball to pop out, and carry it with him back over the jumps.. then the next dog goes.
To me, it sounds like he'd be best suited for agility. Regarding you being slow.. as long as you get some good distance work done you should be good. I've seen old ladies out there with walkers running their dogs and the dogs still Qing, people with leg braces, etc.
While catching is nice. The ball is 'dead' in flyball. You'll need a dog who wants to retrieve an unmoving ball. I've started the flyball basics with Smudge. I want to start classes in a month or so.
Try to wean from throwing a ball to hyping him up holding him throwing the ball and releasing him when it's done moving. Then eventually placing the ball on the ground hyping him up and having him go get it. You also want a really reliable recall. Both are thigns to work on pre classes.
