My Yorkie is 11 months old. Yorkies usually have their first heat earlier than most dogs. I am not sure if she has had one yet though. She is rubbing her bum on the ground and her vulva looks swollen. Is the rubbing on the ground any indication that she is in heat? She is a strictly house bound dog. She even uses a litter box. There are no males to give an indication either. I need help!?

Rubbing her butt could be her anal glands. They have 2 glands on either side of their rectum, and they sometimes have to express by a vet or groomer. One great way to tell if she is indeed in heat, is touch a tissue to her volva, if there is red/pink/orange colored discharge with the swelling she is definatly in heat. Some dogs keep them selves very clean and a tissue is the only way to tell.
Most likely anal glands. They may need to be expressed, usually they are emptied each time your dog has a bowel movement, sometimes they fail to and then get impacted and infected, if she continues to do the "moon walk" as we call it in our house, bring her to the Vet, they can safely do this for you. It is an awful job, trust me! If you ignore it she could get an infection. V.
Every female will act differently when they are in season, though I would also suggest a trip to the vet to check if the anal glands need expressed, also take a stool sample with you to rule out worms.
People are like slinky's, not really good for much. But its still fun to push them down the stairs.
