I have just bought a toy poodle and was wondering if his tail has been docked too short? I want to show him and I am aware that the tail should be docked like 1/3 and then leave 2/3 in length. However, I cannot find out how long the tail should be in length after it has been docked?????????????? his tail is only 1 1/4 inches and I am afraid it will not support a pompon on the end when in show clip. Will he be disqualified?
Per the AKC Standards for Poodles... Disqualifications Size-- A dog over or under the height limits specified shall be disqualified. Clip-- A dog in any type of clip other than those listed under coat shall be disqualified. It does not state anything about there being a disqualification for the length of the tail or the pompom on the end. However, points can be deducted if the judge determines that your dog's tail/pompom does not appear to be correct in proportion to the rest of its body.
Not sure I worded that correctly, but hope you understand what I was trying to say and wish you the best with showing.
Make sure your halo is nice and straight before placing judgement on others.
Stack your poodle on the table and the tip of the tail should be level with the top of the skull. You did not say how old or young the dog was. Alot of times a tail will be docked and still grow alot and other times it stays relatively short. I have my vet dock my poodles tails long. I just love a long dock. That adage about 1/3 does not go anymore because of the difference in bodies, lengths and growth. I have always docked mine at 3 days and just a tad longer then the top of the skull in case the tail bends or curls a little bit. Take a picture and post the link so we can all have a glance. Have your dog stacked so agood look can be had.
I wonder if other dogs think poodles are members of a weird religious cult. Rita Rudner Quote
oh i see. no his tail is not even close to being level with his skull :( it is so short that because his hair is long, you can barely see it. its a pathetic little stump. he wieghs 1.9lb and is 4 months old. He looks like a "bunny- pussy- bear" thats what my family calls him :) Ill try to get a picture up soon. Thanks for all the help. keep the info coming, i have you both very helpful already
