Well one of our Labs died a few weeks ago. The vet said he died of natural causes. My husband was upset but moved on really quickly. We still have our other Lab, a girl, but Jeff is saying he needs to get another one now so he can train it and have it ready to go out with him by the time the next hunting season comes around. Ever since he was little he would always take two dogs out hunting with him no matter what so he said that is the reason. He doesn't like to go out without 2 dogs. I don't feel we should get another dog at the moment just because everyone is just settleing down to the idea that the last dog is gone and by bringing in a new one it will just cause havoc and chaos! But at the same time I understand his reasons for wanting one and respect them very well. I asked him why he couldn't just use one of his Dad's dogs and he said it just didn't feel right. I just need help on choosing which side to lean too. I want to tell him no just as much as I want to say okay. Do you think I am being to hard and should let him do it or do you think I am right and he should wait? Just a little help would be nice.
Also, he has been raising hunting dogs since he was a young boy so training one in time for next season wouldn't be a problem for him!
I think if he's ready now let him go for it. I totally see where he's coming from having grown up with hunters in my family. I have always brought home another puppy right away when we lose a dog, not that a new puppy could ever replace the one that I lost, but the training of the new pup can help ease the pain. Good Luck!
Yes I understand what you all are saying and I think I will just let him get one. And even if the pup isn't ready for this season he will most likely just take his Dad's and then train the pup up for the years after season. He says he can train it quickly and it WILL be ready but I doubt it. I think I will let him get it though. Thanks for all your help!
