My male Dobie is now 8 months old. His vet told me that he would stop growing at 6 months old. He is only 53 pounds and seems soooo small.I never saw the parents. He eats only the best and is an all around healthy and happy dog. I'm so bummed that he's soooo small though. Have they really completed their growth height by 6 months?!?!
Well dogs are usually HALF the size they will be when full grown at six months so I dont know why your vet said he would stop growing then. And even in some larger breeds it takes a little OVER a year for them to become fully grown. I have never personally had a Dobe so I cant tell you for sure when they stop growing but as long as he has adequate nutriton and exercise I wouldnt worry about it.
It really depends on the breed whether or not the dog has it's full height and size by six months.
I doubt that your Doberman is going to end up at 116 pounds. The breed standard puts the ideal height for males at 27 1/2 inches and bitches at 25 1/2 inches. That is normally not the size of a hundred pound dog.
I know that the days of the really big Doberman are over. Now the dog is supposed to be lithe, agile and athletic--not muscle bound.
What we need here, of course, is a Doberman breeder. Do we have one on the site?
I am curious though, how did you end up with a dog whose parents you never saw? Why do you have a breed that you seem to know so little about? Why on earth are you worried about the dog's SIZE? What about your dog's mental and physical health? Training? Socialization?
Well, we have a 6 month old female. She weighs closer to 65-70 pounds. At 8 months I wouldn't worry. I would think he has yet some growing to do. And, 53 pounds is not really small. If you wanted protection, he should grow to sufficiently provide just that.
