My fiance's cousin called today and asked if I could watch her dog for awhile. Well she brought Angel over and she is a major mess. She is severly matted and very skinny. I bathed her and cut her hair because you couldn't even see her eyes. Well after I cut her hair I noticed she has a very very bad eye ucler. Her poor eye is popping out and very bad looking. She gave me drops to put in her eye but they are only for pain they are not for the infection. It is only in one eye. She has seen a vet and the vet gave them two kinds of meds. They could only afford one and that was the drops for the pain. They couldn't afford the antiboitic so they didnt get it. I am going to get her some terramycin first thing in the morning. Does anyone have any suggestion on how to treat this? I am going to try and treat it with the antiboitic ointment and drops until friday and if it is not any better then I am going to take her to the vet then. She told me that the vet told her that the dog may loose her eye. I don't think she is going to come back and get her. I don't think she really wants her. It is really sad. So now I have 7 dogs at the house. She is very cute and well behaved but alittle skittish. I will keep you posted on how she does.
wow, that is so sad! What made you think she didn't want her? (well, I guess her condition could be a huge clue, sorry) . I never saw an eye that had popped like that firsthand (know there is a clinical term but can't remember it!) but I know it's pretty serious. It's not something that should just be left alone for days and days, and I'm sure it's really painful. it reminds me of an animal precinct episode where a shih tzu (yep!) was taken because of that very thing. Well, I know they went to the owner and warned them they had to get the dog to the vet ASAP or they would take it, now I can't remember whether the owner complied or not. Can you give her to a shih tzu rescue? Maybe they can afford surgery if it's necessary through donations?? Or do you want to keep her?
I have a yorkie with no tear duct in her left eye so it used to get ulsers all the time before she had surgery but hers were only small and never progressed the vet should give you antibiotics for it in the morning but for tonight you might want to try soaking a tea bad in hot water, letting it cool and using it as a compress. it used to help for my dog.
Antibiotic drops/ointment is a good idea but the Vet may want to (I would highly suggest this) give either an oral or injectable antibiotic. This helps the antibiotic get into the dog's system better because the eye has natural barriers against foreign materials, and it tends to keep most of the medicine out. If the eye is bulging that means you not only have an exterior rupture but also an interior infection. I've seen this once before on a Pug. I'm with you on this. Get that little darling on Anti's quick. Good Luck! --PuPz
