please tell me all about dogs with kidney problems, the vet talked to my mom today telling her that Angel has a kidney problem that they will treat with medicine to see if the kidneys respond to it. I am really worried, because what if her kidneys didn't respond, then what? My neighbors 14 yr old cat has kidney disease and she has her cat on some purina kidney food and she has pill stuff for him, that i have never had to give to him in the past year that i have watched him. Is it a once a month type pill?
I don't know hardly anything about kidney problems so please fill me in, so that I don't have to worry about it so much! From what my mom says, the vet just didn't sound so positive, and on Monday we will take her in early, they will put her on I.Vs and then keep her ALL night :( This is going to suck, because when they take a dog in over night then thats pretty serious, is it something to completely panic over, my sister just had a baby shower today and i was all tears and all from hearing about Angel. Everybody made it seem like she was going to die, and completely freaking me out, so now i don't know what to think. My family just doesn't understand what that dog means to me, i guess thats becuase i'm the only one who takes care of her.
please give me some info on the kidney situation, thank you, mypoodlerocks and her adorable poodle
Kidney disease can be treated with diet or medication. In extremely bad cases there can be acute kidney failure, but that's typically caused by ingesting poisons like antifreeze, for example.
It's basically one of those things that you are probably just going to have to be optimistic and hope for the best. Dietarily, you ideally want to be feeding Angel a diet specifically formulated for kidney problems, one that is low protein and low phosporous.
Never trust a tall dwarf... he's lying about something.
were taking Angel in tommorow morning, i'm not going to go, becuase I know i'll ball like a baby! Today is just all about Angel, wright after i post this message, me and Angel are going to go in the backyard and play.
I just have one last question, when we put Angel on the kidney medication, will she be able to go back to her young hyper self again, i definatly would not want her to be in pain. And will her hair grow back, or will she always be bald? I'm going to charge my camera up so i can take a billion pictures of Angel today, i'm going to need them! :)
Toby is 17 years old and has lived with kidney disease for three years or so. We control his kidney disease with his diet. At the begining we were going to the vets for a blood test (BUN) monthly, and now we go every six months and his values are fine. When going monthly we were able to tweak the recipes to bring him as close as possible to the normal values.
Your vet can give you recipes to make his food, and once you are used to making the food it is so easy, inexpensive and sooo much better for the dog that you will not return to regular dog food again.
One of the first things you want to do is to reduce his protein intake.
You can PM me if you have any further questions. I would be happy to help.
Thanks everybody! Angel is doing good, she's back at the vet again, but we have seen improvements on her. She seems less tired and when we handed her over to the vet, she got all squirmy and was crying for us to take her back, she didn't do anything of that sort the day before. We are't going to be making her homemade foods, but we will be feeding her Innova dog food along with immune and health supplements and fish oil and omega stuff. Angel's going to be ok, I just know it. We will see what the vet says today, and if he allows the I.V needle to come off today. I can't wait to see her. She slept with me last night, and kept me awake the whole night. She kept moving around, and then she would shove her nose into a pile of blankets and fall asleep, which made me nervouse, becuase how is she supposed to breath. I probably got an hour of sleep but i'm not tired anyways. Thanks for the advice and help, i will keep you all updated. Thanks also mrs.joanne, if i have any questions i will defiantly ask you :)
