My 10 year old cat Nala has hurt herself 3 times now! We dont have any other cats but some how she gets deep scratchs and dark red spots. What could be causing these? PLEASE give me some advice! Does she bite herself? I dont know and my family and I are very worried.
Have you checked her for fleas. Even though she doesn't go outside they could have been brought into her. If she has been outside around other animals, I doubt she has rabies. Some symptoms of rabies are afraid of water, lost of muscle control, foaming at the mouth, change in personality.
I was under the impression that feline and canine rabies was all but eradicated. Your best bet is to take her to a vet. There are numerous reasons this could be happening from fleas to allergies. Only a vet can tell you for sure.
Do you trim her claws? I would definitely take her to the vet to find out what is going on especially if this is s new behavior. But if she is scratching herself deeply enough to bleed, you should keep her claws trimmed. Even if it's not fleas, she might just have alergies or something that is making her itch bad enough to dig until it hurts.
lovinmylucy, feline and canine rabies is definitely not eradicated. In Toronto this past week, a litter of rabid collie pups were sold, at a market where God knows how many people touched them. It was all over the news in Canada. It's still out there, for sure.
Thank you all very much for giving me suggestions. We have checked for fleas and that is not the case. We know she doesnt have rabbies, and no i will never give her away because of scratches. Like I said she is not an outside cat and we trim her names every month. After checking out all of your suggestions, we still have not found out what could be causing this. I have tried to take a look at the scratches but she wont let me look. I know she is taking very good care of it, I just want to make sure she will be okay. Thank you all again for all of your suggestions!
Where are the scratched located? My cat had a litter of kittens a couple of years ago before she was spayed and created and then kept wounds open by licking them. I really think it just became habit and she has just recently stopped so that the hair is growing back and the abrasions have healed. These are always located where she can reach with her mouth, obviously, and usually on her tummy around the nipples. She has one now on the scruff of her neck that I suspect was inflicted by my husband's cat. I have an appointment with the vet to investigate whether there is another cause. I would recommend seeing a vet. After we go, I'll let you know what I am told about the sores.
Most of the scratches are on the inside of her legs or on her sides. I can tell they are getting better because she hs been licking them and taking care of them. After looking at them, the hair was growing back so I know she is okay.
