I have two horses, two yrs and 8 yrs. I am always getting a call in the morning or if I beat the call Im out there and my horses are always in the orchard next door. There are no down fences, and no way for them to sneek under the fence. I dont know if they are jumping. How do I get them to break this habbit?
What kind of fencing are you using? How big is their pasture? What are you feeding besides free choice pasture? How long have you had the horses?
Have you tried parking your vehicle and watching to see how they are escaping?
Not only is it dangerous for the horses to be running about freely, it doesn't make for the best neighbors. Who wants a 1/2 ton animal running through their yard or garden? Not too many people that I know of. Not to mention the probability of them getting struck by a car or truck, causing serious injury or death not only to themselves, but also to the person driving.
Invest in some good fencing, it is worth the extra money. I had 4 foot chain link fencing around my entire pasture, plus a string of barb wire on the top of that. It cost a lot for 10 acres, but was worth the investment. The barb wire wasn't so much to contain the horses, as it was to deter kids from climbing the fence to be in with them. I never had a horse escape the fencing and I owned horses for over 25 years.
ok so Ive figured it out, when I was grainging that three horses we have oncce the two escape artists where done and wanted more...they would put their heads under the nylone rope tape stuff and lift up to where they could fit thier body under it and move quickly...first the colt did it and then my mare did right after. we are supposed to have electric fencing up by this week I hope!!!
I know this may sound strange but your feed can cause them to need to work it off too. Sweet mix for one can cause disasterous behaviors. At least one strand of electric fence at about 4 ft. would be a huge help too. I definately would stay away from barbed wire, I don't think they should even make the stuff, it's trouble waiting to happen. Good luck!
