We have 2 cats about 2 years old. They are constantly licking my kids. (Even without food on their hands). They don't lick anyone besides my kids. They also chew on my daughters hair at night. I am not sure if it is normal to lick, but my cats do it too..
It's probably a grooming bonding type thing. It's what their Mom did for them and it makes them feel happy and cozy so they do it too when they want to show affection. I have three and they wash each other's faces when they cuddle. And sometimes I swear the littlest one is expecting me to lick her face too. She gets her face right up near mine and presses against my nose. (Just for the record, ewwww not gonna happen. But it's very cute.) Usually if a cat is trying to warn that they have had enough or they are about to bite, they growl or hiss. Licking is more of a happy thing.
I had three cats from the same litter and the one male used to find his siblings and sit on them so he could lick them. His brother would love it but his sister was not so keen(she was a loner after her father died). Not only did he lick his siblings he would lick my face as well !I loved it.
My cat licks me on the tip of my nose, and only when he is in his "lovey, dovey, now I would like you to pet me" mood. I always thought that he was giving kisses. And I've now started to pick him up and say "give me kisses," and he does, except sometimes it can take a minute! LOL
its normal for cats to lick, most often it really is a sign of affection. Another way of showing affection is gently biting on your nose or your face. Also, looking at you and slowly blinking her eyes is a way of saying "I love you."
Glad to hear that last comment about the biting on the face. I thought my Chelsea was just crazy. I knew it was affection because it only happens at lovey times but sometimes it hurts and I have never had this happen so often before. Bailey did it once or twice but she licked my face first and then chomp. But Chelsea does it EVERY night on my nose or chin when I am in bed. Good to know that somebody has seen this before.
