I have two 4month old Shih-poos. One female one male. I've been having trouble potty training them on pads. They go everywhere in my house. This needs to stop ASAP. I want to get a crate. Should I get just one ore two. My pups are small so I would think one is good enough. I'm new at this so any help is greatly appreciated.
They make small/medium metal crates that have dividers. You can get them at any pet store (and I think Wal-Mart). It is great to crate train. I had both of my dogs trained within a month of bringing them home. Good Luck!
Potty training can be hard. I have a Maltese puppy that is now 8 wks. old and she is doing well. What I have done is found spot where she can go poop and relieve herself. I use the potty pads and sprayed the puppy trainer on the pad. Just once. Had her smell it...and she has been very well. Don't get me wrong she does have accidents here and there but she is doing extremely well. She does not poop in her crate, I know whenever she eats or drinks...pretty soon she is going to go. So I watch her from time to time to make sure she goes but overall it's been working for me ; )
It's twice as hard to train 2 dogs as it is to train one. Why? Because it's so hard to watch two dogs at once closely enough to catch when they make mistakes.
Personally I think puppy pads are a waste of time. Train your dogs to go outside, and only outside. Take them out, keep them on a leash, and only let htem free to play after they go potty. When they do potty, praise them and give them a treat.
If they are going potty all over your house, you are giving them too much access and you aren't watching them closely enough. Close all bedroom doors. Get the $10 child gates from Walmart and block off all sections of the house. You always want them to be in the same room as you, you never want them to get out of your line of sight.
When one goes potty and you catch it in the act, say "No!" sharply, and take the dog outside immediately. Keep it outside until it goes, then praise and treat. If you don't catch it in the act of going potty, it's too late to do anything and you arent paying close enough attention to the dogs. Clean up the spot with an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle.
Even though your dogs are small, invest in 2 small crates. Put them in the crates when you aren't home, and at night so taht they can't wander off and potty while you're sleeping. As soon as you get up in the morning or get home, take them outside (I'd pick them up so you dont' open the door and then they go potty on the floor by the crate). Take them outside after meals, after play time, after naps.
Never trust a tall dwarf... he's lying about something.
Crate training is one of the easier ways to help house train dogs. for two dogs i would think one crate w/ the divider would be fine put one on one side and one on the other. they only really need enough space to turn around and lay down and thats it. the less room they have the less they will want to use the bathroom in the laying area. another thing dont leave water and food where they can get it all the time feed like once in morning and then take them out to potty about 20 minutes later. and then feed again in afternoon potty time in 20 mins after eating. until they have potty training under control then you should be able to leave down and they will hold it until you can take them out.
