My new baby Sushi is a Bichon/Shih-Tzu cross...sometimes called a Shichon or Teddy Bear pup. He weighed in at 19lbs they other day (and just shy of 5 months in age) and I'm thinking he's got to be on the large size of both breeds?? I love him no matter what size shape or color he winds up being but I don't know anyone else with this mix and would like to see some photos or this mix at the same age...any pics or info would be appreciated...thankx!!
I have to say that I've never heard of a shih tzu OR a Bichon weighing 19lbs... and especially at 5 months. You usually take the weight at 6 months and double it. That almost looks like a Collie cross to me. I would say that you were lied to. Hopefully you'll stick to your word and love the dog no matter what shape/size it becomes.
Did you see the parents of your puppy? I don't see Shih tzu nor Bichon in the dog at all. The Shih tzu has the extremely short muzzle and even mixed with a longer nosed breed, the muzzle is usually shorter than your puppy.
19 pounds is way out of line for either breed and your dog is nowhere near done growing. I think someone fed you a line when they sold you the puppy, trying to make more money is my guess.
Either way, the puppy is cute. Love him for the pet that he is. Be sure to have him neutered too, he'll make a better pet.
I know it might seem big considering both breeds but we had some friends of ours that had a small jack russle and their neighbors had a small beagle, less than 20 pounds, well long story short neither were altered and there was an oops litter. All of the puppies were 15 pounds when they were only 12 weeks old. Sometimes mixing the breeds express certain genes held back by the selective breeding done in purebreds such as growth regulation. A cute puppy none the less.
I dont have this mix but i do have a bichon and a maltese mix her name is Daisy and shes 1.5 years old, shes a big girl weighing 17 pounds last vet visit months ago and gosh could weigh more now. My vet tells me she looks like a maltese but takes on the bichon size, well why does he say that tho when a bichon isnt 17+pounds? guess i never thought about that till now. Shes big boned and very thick, big paws just a solid girl. and i have a pure bred maltese and hes tiny and like 6 pounds and 9 months old and is tiny features and their coats are about the same, but really dont look to much alike, and then i have Bentley hes 2 years old and hes a bichon and a toy poodle mix and weighs 8 pounds and hes small his coat is of a poodle and doesnt look like a bichon at all, vet said you really cant tell hes not a pure bred poodle. everyone always assumes hes pure bred but of coarse he isnt and i do tell them hes a mix of a bichon and a toy poodle which they said they would of never guessed. So i guess it really varys when dogs are mixed, they could take on either breed, but then again be out of standards for each breed which i dont know why but it happens. All 3 of my dogs are pure white and have no other color on them. and they all vary in size and its so funny when they all line up at thr front door (full glass front door) they stand by size, louie, bentley and daisy- dont know why this is but its every time, side by side- I love them all and really dont care how much they weigh as long as they are happy and healthy-
