I will be whelping out a litter of Goldens next week, and would like ideas on how to mark these little ones so I can see at a glance if they are all nursing enough etc.. I have bred Aussies and it is no trouble to tell them apart at a glance. I am looking forward to advice. I have a fried who raises Irish Setters and she uses ribbon collars.
I tried nail polish, and it was a mess to do and wore off quickly. I was worried ribbon or yarn could get twisted and strangle them, so used pipe cleaners. Worked great- I left them loose enough that if they got caught on anything they could slip right off.
Zoe had a litter of 11 and they almost ALL looked alike! What I did at first was got an old cotton t-shirt and cut it like ribbon. I wrote w/ permanent marker a different color on it. That worked great for a while because it was a stretchy enough material that it would stretch if they got it caught on something but I could put it on them a little snugger than I would yarn. Then they started pooping everywhere, and mamma stopped cleaning them up and it got NASTY! So then I bought "their" color yarn and did that. That worked out great too! I would just check it every other day or so to make sure it wasn't snug yet. But don't make it too lose, you'll end up with switched pups! LOL! I made it so I could stick my pinky in and like I said just checked it every other day.
