I've had my beagle for 5 days. First day he wouldn't eat. Second & third day he only ate if we put some in our hand and put it under his mouth. These last couple of days he won't eat at all. I've had to make him eat. I will say he was the smallest of his litter. Much smaller. The breeder gave us the option to bring him back for a refund or another puppy. But my husband feels that he will bounce back. Took him to the vet a couple of days ago and he seems to think that everything is just related to lack of nutrition. Which is good to hear that nothing major is wrong, but how can I get him to eat? I've tried dry puppy food, canned, dry mixed with canned, puppy milk supplement, and the supplement mixed with the dried food. Any other suggestions? I'm at a loss for what to do and can't bear to think of returning him.
You could try feeding him some brown rice and ground chicken or hamburger, just make a small portion, and see what he thinks. You could also try feeding him a replacement formula out of a bottle, using evaporated milk, 3 ounces of water, 1 egg and 1 teaspoon of Karo syrup, or goats milk with no water, instead of the evaporated milk and water. I would definitely play around with real ground meat, and homemade formula, gradually incorporating the dry dog food, mashed at first, if you have to. What brand of dog food are you feeding him, and was he eating solid dry food when you bought him, or were they still soaking it? You said he is small, are you sure he is 8 weeks old? Good luck with the little guy, and keep us posted.
First of all... why on earth would you return a puppy for not eating? That is weird. Second.... what did the vet say about how much the dog should be eating? Third..... Is the dog drinking water? 5 days is not that long. I suggest you STOP trying everything in the book you can think of, settle for a nice wet food that your vet suggests, you can even warm it up a little, and start a regular feeding schedule.
You don't need to be hand feeding this dog yet. Nor shoving every kind of food in the world at it. Your vet will monitor its health, and you should keep in close contact with them.
Dogs will often refuse to eat after their situation changes. it's due to stress. Just relax, try to make you pup feel at home, teach him when it's meal time, and if your vet says he is healthy, and he is drinking water, then chill. Once he is comfortable with you and his new family, he'll relax and be able to eat.

When I first brought my Ladie home she was not eating. They also gave me the choice of brnging her back and I did NOT. This is what I did: I bought Veal concentrated baby food and rice cereal. Mixed 2 tablespoons of the veal 1 teaspoon rice cereal and she ate it just fine. I also gave her Nutrical twice a day. My husband would just look at her and tell me not to get attached. I had already fallen in love. I also gave her plain pedyalite because she is a maltese and they tend to have drops in their eletrolytes when not properly nourished. She is now almost 3 YO in April and she eats Science Diet puppy food because she is only 4 1/2 lbs and I feel she needs the xtra calories.
I hope this helps I swear by Nutrical and you can get it at Petsmart or at Petco.
