So Lucy's always been a licker and it's never caused a problem but last night I noticed on of her hot spots is back full-fleddged. It's very red and warm to the touch and then today she's been very moppy and had diarreha while I was gone. I know she's sick and I'm pretty sure she has a fever. I haven't taken her temp because to be honest I don't really know how I just feel she has a temp call it motherly intuition. I've put a shirt of mine on her so that she can't lick and I was wondering if anyone had any recipes for her besides chicken in rice because we think she's allergic to chicken. Also she hasn't eaten anything out of the ordinary recently if that helps and I plan on making her an appointment with the vet I just wanted to give it a day because it seems like allergies to me and the weather here has been super weird.
Oh and she's on Prairie Lamb and Oatmeal and Merrick Wilderness Blend
hmm... I would be worried with the fever.... but, you don't KNOW she has one (I fully support your mother's intuition).
You could try hamburger with the rice instead of chicken... or lamb (I think you said you feed lamb food). mmm.. lamb and rice sounds wonderful. Make me some too!
Make absolute sure that the dog is drinking water. I don't remember what kind of dog you have, but they can dehydrate FAST. especially with the diareaha.
I just read on another post that Barbara fed her dog a babyfood (some meat flavored one). Also Pedialyte... both those are really good ideas. The sugar in the pedialyte will help the dog keep drinking. you can dilute it with x-tra water.
Now.... it's also good to withhold food until their diahreah is gone. They do not need to eat. Let whatever it is pass through their system. Sometimes you are making a bad situation worse by pushing weird or different food sources. I wouldn't push the food. Just the liquid.
A nice beef or lamb broth might be your best bet right now.
Thanks KDubbs for the suggestions and she's a basset hound btw. I think she has a cold because, and don't laugh, she has a runny nose, is sneezy, and just seems all around achey like when well like when you get a cold. She's had hot spots before but I thought we'd solved them by putting her on the lamb and rice, I don't know if she's allergic to the lamb too or maybe grains, or maybe it just an effect of the "cold"...my poor baby has just layed next to me all night cover witha blanket sleeping waking up occasionally to sneeze or get a small sip of water. I didn't have any pedialyte but a mixed a little bit of 100% rasberry/cranberry juice with some water just so she'd be getting some liquids and if she's not doing better tomorrow I'll def. be getting her some not to mention calling the vet.
I'd be getting her to the vets soon, as there could be an underlying problem. I had Basset Hounds for years and sure miss those crooked legs, knobby knees, droopy eyes and hanging ears, not to mention the doggy slobber. Oh the memories. :)
So we went to the vet this morning and as I suspected she was running a temp. (103.8) but heart and lungs sounded fine. We did a blood test just to make sure it wasn't pancritis or anything and the results came back fine, platlets a little low but other than that everything was normal. My vet agrees with me that because of the hot spot and really bad ear infection that it's a food allergy and I'm leaning more towards it being grain just because she's not on any common meats. So after spending $266 we think it's allergy mixed with cold thanks for all the help!
