I too Ladie to the Vet ( religiously ) on her 45th day to finally find out that she is NOT pregnant. In a way I am very happy vbecasue my baby is just 4.5 lb and whelping would most definetely be a challange to her physically. On the other hand, the thought of a puppy just thrilled me so, my hsuband went out shoppping for a Shih Tzu female ( I have always loved those dogs ). This coming Saturday Ladie will be spayed and with I hope to enjoy her for MANY years to come.
I will however be coming back for some advise from you Shih Tzu lovers.
Thanks for all the advices. I heeded the warning and scheduled the spaying.
Congratulations on your future puppy. You couldn’t have chosen a better breed in my opinion. When choosing your new Shih Tzu, please keep this in mind.
Check for personality. A calm sweet personality is what you want.
Check eyes. Big round eyes that are clear and not tearing up.
Check coat for fullness and for signs of parasites.
Check for an open fontanel (the soft spot) If it is open you have to be VERY careful with the pup until it closes.
Check for umbilical hernia. An opening at the belly button. It is very common and usually shows up at about 6 weeks. of age It will close on it's own the older the pup gets, but it traps fat on the outside of the abdominal wall causing an outie belly button.
Check parents (both if possible)for personality and health.
Check where the pups are raised. If you walk into the house and the smell overpowers you, LEAVE as fast as you can.
Check references of the breeder and don't fall for the first cute puppy you see.
Good luck in your search and post lot's of pics when you get her. I love Shih Tzu puppies.
Life isn't like a box of chocolates . . it's more like a jar of jalapenos. What you do today, might burn your rump tomorrow
So much for your very good advice Sereneshihtzu. You were "barking up the wrong tree". She ignored everything you were so kind to write out trying to help and bought a puppymill puppy at a pet store. Now she's on the medical questions category with a very sick puppy. This is very sad but just reaffirms everything you were trying to say. Cross your fingers for the poor baby.
Looking at the bright side. This puppy got into the hands of somebody who cares very much and it has the best chance with her. It sounds like she's doing better tonight. (recent update) The breeder her puppy came from has every breed you can think of. MAJOR puppy mill!!!
Sereneshihtzu-- it has been 2 days since I pm'ed you asking about exactly what type of genetic testing you get done on your Shih Tzu's. I am so lonely out here being the only breeder called out for not testing their dogs. LOL.
OFA numbers please!
