I just got a 1/2 chihuahua and 1/2 dashound that is 6 weeks old today off of freecycle. I met the people at days inn and they told me the puppy had been given dewormer but not seen a vet yet, it was 230 today when i got her, well i can't get her to eat at all. I took her to pet smart and a employee told me she had a pot belly and we could feel it move alot. I bought puppy chow, and ceasars soft food, and a bottle and formula. At 800 she had a normal stool, brown and wormfree. At 845 she had white liquid stool and a long skinny white worm came out it moved alittle then died. At 900 she passed another one, at at 1030 she passed another one this last time, it was a lot shorter and the stool was white and bloody. She still hasn't ate at all, she wont suck the bottle either. I am trying to find a vet and take her before work in the morning, but tonight what can i do for her before i take her to the vet or hospital in the morning. I researched roundworms and all other worms on the internet and i beleive it is roundworms. Do you think the people dewormed her and that is why the worms are coming out? I bought flea shampoo, she's had 5 baths while i have had her tonight and i bought flea spray at pet smart. I also got her a bed and toys, will the worms or eggs get in her bed? And is it ok to hold her tonight? She will be going to vet in the morning, I am just worried about tonight and her not eating.
Yes that is the purpose of the dewormer and i'd assume that's why they're coming out. At six weeks she shouldn't need a bottle, she might not be eating because of the stress of being in a new home and away from her littermates and mom. Did I read it wrong or did you say that you had already given her FIVE baths today? A dog should only have a bath once every six weeks at the most and a puppy that young should only be given a bath if it's absolutely necessary because at that age they still have a hard time regulating their own temperature. Did you see signs of fleas on her and/or is she acting like she has them? Tapeworms are the ones that come from fleas and based on your description it doesn't sound like tapeworms(though that's just my opinion). I'd just hold her and love her tonight to get her used to you guys and take her to the vet first thing in the morning for a checkup and shots. Congrats on the pup! I have a dachshund/Chihuahua mix too and would LOVE to see pictures!
Thanks to all replys. I will lay off the baths after the 3rd one she seemed to like it she liked my hand as i gaveit to her, then i wraped her up tight in a warm towel out of the dryer and she feel asleep. She has peed 2 times on her puppy pad and I haven't seen anymore worms since the third one(which she used on her pad, maybe she will be easy to potty train). Yes the first bath i saw fleas and a tick come off of her and plenty of dirt, poor baby. now her and her little bed is in my bed laying between me and my husband, and she's sleeping, that's all she has done(sleep). I still haven't been able to get her to eat, but i found a vet near me that opens at 700am so i will be on the phone and getting her in tomorrow, i hope they can get us in. I will keep you posted on Daisy.
Oh great, now the dog has fleas as well as worms? Your house is most likely infested with fleas now and you should focus on getting rid of them. You may need to bomb the house to get rid of them. Any material that the dog has come in contact with could be harboring fleas, carpets, beds, furniture, blankets, clothes.
Well Daisy went to the vet, she got 1st shots and dewormer and 5 liquid dewormers for the next 5 days. Oh no we don't have a infestation of fleas, I was smart enough to only use old towels to wrap her up, and after all those baths with flea shampoo the vet said they are all gone. She was to sick to walk or play she stayed wrapped up and i though the towels away and we bleached everything else. We are all fine now she is eating and playing the vet says she is perfect and the worms were normal, i am just glad they are gone. Thanks for all the advice, I was really upset and worried last night.
I realize this is after the fact, but you might want to note that most flea shampoos direct that they not be used on dogs under 12 weeks-I would refrain from using it on her again unless directed by your vet or if this shampoo does not carry that warning. The chemicals are toxic and can cause serious problems in a pups little system. Seizures and death are not uncommon.
