I have a dog question: I have a Rat Terrier, who, upon hearing the smoke detector beep (not even a long beep, just a quick little beep that tells you it's reset) goes into a panicked frenzy. When it goes off he begins to cower, his heart starts to race, beating incredibly hard and fast, and he "clings" to whoever may be around for comfort. He even tries to jump out of the window! Basically he gets incredibly upset and scared. It takes hours to get him to calm down.
Has anyone ever had this happen to their dog, and more importantly, does anyone know why this happens?
Thanks for reading, any input would be most appreciated.
I don't know about your smoke detector, but mine is piercing, loud, and just plain obnoxious. I freak out when the thing goes off, mainly because its so damn annoying. Thus, my dog freaks out. Dogs hearing tend to be better and more sensitive to ours, so imagine your smoke detector, only 10 times worse, and that's what your dog is hearing. I'd freak too!
Dogs don't have the ability to reason. You or, well at least I, would think "oh, its my cooking that set that thing off." Your dog just sees it as a sudden, loud, obnoxious and new sound. Therefore, they may get nervous, panicky and/or scared.
Even if you are on the right track, you will still get run over if you just sit there. (Will Rogers)
I have a toy eskimo...and when I was watching Modern Family (i recorded it), the episode included a smoke alarm battery dying...and every time it went off in the show, Lily freaked out. I didn't get to watch the episode. I just replaced my smoke alarm because the laws changed in MA. When I tested it she freaked out again. I think it pierces her hearing. I felt badly...that's why I just checked on line. Apparently she's not the only one.
Oh my gosh barb that is so funny that you said that about modern family because my dog did the exact same thing with that episode, it took me a while to realize why he was freaking out. I also noticed when I burned toast and the house got smokey he freaked out before the alarm even went off so maybe they know that the beeping is a warning of some kind.
haha wow, we were watching that episode of Modern Family recently and my dog freaked out. He is a beagle/dachshund mix. He has never really cared when our smoke detector beep, but this had him shaking so bad I thought we were going to end up at the vet. After a few min we turned off the episode and fetched his ball outside. He was fine after that. We finished the episode a couple of days ago while he was in the yard.
Great to hear that there are other dogs with the same sensitivity to the smoke alarm. Actually my neighbor's smoke alarm is the cause of my dog's distress. I have spoken with him several times to keep his batteries from running out but invariably - it keeps happening again and again and my dog suffers and has now stopped going out into our backyard.
Is there something that can be done e.g. reported to official authorities so that a warning can be conveyed to this neighbor so that he takes this responsibility more seriously - rather than me reminding him almost every month or so? One time - I even provided him with the batteries, since he was sick and had not been able to get out for a while, but I am losing patience and hate to see my dog start shaking as soon as the alarm comes on every 3-4 min.
This has happen to me twice, both in the middle of the night so my dog would hop on the bed waking me up. Scared a panicked with her body on my face and her head in the pillows. If I would get up she would tug on my leg like a child, the first time this happen I seriously thought my dog had seen a ghost, I had never seen her act like that ever. She's not the one to cower for anyone without first making a scene barking up a storm. When I thought it might have been the smoke detector, the second time it happen confirmed it! One more permanent solution is to hard wire the smoke detectors into the house, I don't know if that's something your neighbor would do/you would do for your neighbor but you wouldent have to worry about the bat tires anymore.
It seems that I'm not alone in this situation. My dog was so scared and he was panicking when he heard the sound of a smoke detector when I first tested it. I agree with HeatherFeather that it's because it was his first time to hear a sudden, loud, obnoxious and new sound.

My dog is a rat terrier also. He's two. I actually had to take the smoke alarm out of my room because it would go off and my dog would sit in the corner for hours just shaking because he was so scared of it. He still continues to do it and i tried everything. He actually happened about 20 minutes ago, and he's sitting in a corner right now. I try to hold him and pet him to let him know that its okay. Nothing works, even asking " wanna go for a walk " nothing. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!!!
My dog does this too and know I know why but it terrifies me that what if there was a fire and the fire alarm would go off? My dog usually hides under my bed and its hard to reach him so I am scared that he can't get out because he's afraid.
Our Shiba/Dachshund mix HATES the smoke alarm. If it goes off he will run around under it, barking and snarling. He has jumped and grabbed it out of my hand and cracked the cover of it in seconds. You just say the word "smoke alarm" and he loses it. Same goes for using the "find handset" option for the cordless phone. One time he found the phone before we did and he went under the bed and broke it. When he loses it he gets wild-eyed and bloodshot eyes. When he's in this "zone" he's a little Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hide persona. He won't bite anyone, just intensely focused. At all other times he's very obedient, comedic, loves cuddles/scratches and belly rubs. Lots of personality from a little guy. Love him lots!
