My 12 year old son and I are considering buying our first dog, but what breed might suit us, do you guys think? It'll spend most days all on its own while we are at work/school, will any dog adapt to this? we also have a 2 year old cousin who visits regularly and will love to say hello to our dog! I was thinking of a whippet or a wire haired terrier. Honestly, will it work?
Many many dogs are left alone for 6-8 hours a day and do fine in a family environment. Since you have a 2 year old coming to the house, I'd go away from the terrier personally. They have spunky and sometimes feisty personalities that might be inappropriate around small children, who are prone to falling over and knocking about.
I have a friend who has whippets, and his dogs are absolutely wonderful. You can't let them off the leash at all in open/unfenced areas, they literally run faster than they think, so if they see a rabbit or a squirrel, they are off to the races and there's a chance youd' never see your dog again. But as far as gentle and family pets they're great.
Keep in mind that if you are away from home a lot, it's going to be harder to house train the dog. That is an advantage to getting an older dog, that's already housetrained or at the very least, crate trained. If someone could come home during the day at lunchtime and let the pup outside for a potty break, that'd make things a bit easier.
Never trust a tall dwarf... he's lying about something.
Thanks for the advice We'd love a puppy as we are both a bit timid around big dogs, so it can grow up with us. Glad to hear many dogs adapt to being home alone. The stuff about whippets not being let off the lead has put me off that breed, my son is really looking forward to fun chasing a ball and running with his dog off the lead! Wouldnt fancy it mounting the walls of the garden after a squirrel either. Hear what you said about the terrier too around a little child. Think I need to consider other medium sized dog, any other ideas would be most appreciated?
If you have your mind set on a pure bred dog, go to AKC.org and look at all the breeds. If you see one you like you can go into a description of it, weight, hight, etc. Check with a local breed specific club for personality traits. They may even know a rescue that has some available.
We adopted an adult dog. He was housebroken, crate trained, etc. when we got him. It would probably be best for you to get an adult. There are plenty up for adoption in the medium size category on petfinder.
Whippets are shy and timid and could easily bite/harm and 2 year old if he does something the dog does not like. I agree, go to your local shelter and tell the workers your situation and your lifestyle so they can see if they have a dog that is right for you. I would also suggest not a puppy because they need lots of attention, training, ect. Good Luck!
