i have a white pit who was recently diagnosed with mutiple mast cell tumors on his abdomin. my oncologist appointment is not for 2 weeks and i would love any and all advice i can get. he just started getting ear infections and sneezing continuously, and i know this cancer is related to allergies. any advice or information to give me? things to know? questions to ask?
There is a site devoted to cancer in dogs where you can get lots of information and support in how to deal with the problem. I don't know if I'd be allowed to post the website here but if you google "dog cancer forum" you should be able to find it. Unfortunately I found it after we lost a dog to cancer.
You are absolutely right when you say your dog's allergies are connected to the cancerous cells. I don't know if you've been able to pinpoint the allergen, or allergens, but you can easily start with food, for one. Stop feeding him for 24 hours at least, giving small amounts of pedialyte and good drinking water. From then on, start with boiled brown rice, and a meat the you are sure he's not allergic to. Keep that up for at least a month. The allergens that contribute to an animal having cancer, are diet, food colourings, food additives, poor nutrition, air and water pollution. Stress and advanced age also weaken the immune system, which in turn weakens the animal's ability to fight off cancer.
