I have a 7 month old pit bull and lab? mix (we don't know for sure) named Honey and she is the biggest push over EVER! We got her at 7 weeks from a friend of ours who resuces Pits. He has 1 Male, 3 females and a puppy now. And he laughs about calling them his "big mean baby killers" because if you walk up to any of them the fall down and beg for a belly rub. What I'm trying to do is raise awareness for these dogs because a few rich jerks in the media gave them a bad name. Every single pit that I have ever come into contact with has been nothing but sweet, and the shelters are full of pit mixes and it breaks my heart. People need to understand its not in their nature to be mean, its the owners who raise them to be that way. I'm more affraid of the 5 lb non-stop barking growling little dogs that I see all over. Those things look like they could kill. Please help stand up for these dogs, all they need is a little love.
We currently have a chocolate brown pit that is about 6 months old. She is just the sweetest thing! She plays with my 6 and 10 year old kids and when it's cold outside, she will curl up around the 2 miniature wienie dogs if she thinks that they are too cold. If we don't let the wienie dogs in fast enough to suit her, she will bang on the door to get our attention to let them in. She is so funny. She is actually my oldest son's dog and we are currently trying to find her a new home. I asked him not to get her because I knew that he would be too busy with college and work to pay much attention to her, but when do kids ever listen to their parents? I don't want to just give her to anybody because of the nasty reputation that pits have. She so completely blows that rep right out of the water.
Honey don't worry I don't think you'll find that prejudice here. I have yet to meet someone on this site that doesn't agree with you and think that they are very sweet loving animals. Welcome to the site!
Sorry to say that I actually ran into a pit that scared me to death.
This man was walking his dog with a lead pipe in one hand TO HIT THE DOG WITH IF IT GOT OUT OF LINE. I thought, "Who is he kidding?" when the dog turned and went for him, snarling and ravening like something from hell.
He hit the dog with a resounding thwak and it settled right down.
I asked him if he would let me walk past and he hauled the dog to the side of the sidewalk. As I went by, it went for me and he hit the dog AGAIN.
Due to this site, I am a lot more tolerant of pits and pit mixes. Mostly they want to lick you to death.
But this was scary. Right out of one of those pit torture videos.
I called the cops, but you know they have lots to do and by the time they got there he was long gone.
I absolutely love pit bulls, they are the sweetest dogs you'll ever meet. We got a pit bull at the barn I ride at her name is cabella and she is an Angel! Cabella goes to all our horse shows, and her tail is constantly wagging, everybody at the barn loves her and plays with her. Cabella gets to be off leash at shows, she follows me and others who ride at the barn only, she knows each and everyone of us. We all do jumping with her over the horse jumps, and we race her and play soccer with her. I love Cabella, she has sooooooooo much energy, but at the end of the day she is sooooooo tired from constantly running around and playing with anyone who enters the barn. Cabella is spoiled, she has the cats and kittens to play with, occasional dogs, adn the horses. If cabella finds something on the ground, even food, she picks it up and brings it to me or other members of the barn, just to make sure she can eat it. Cabella is awesome, i love pits!!!!
OMG Catdog, I would have been absolutely mortified as well! I dare say that type of treatment would not create a friendly personality in a lab or a golden retriever either, though. I'm still trying to fathom walking my own dog with a weapon to hit him with if he attacked me! Doesn't bashing his head sort of defeat any healthiness that the walk might have had? UGGHH.
