I was wondering how to find the best dog food for your dog? I have a 7 month old beagle mix who came from the shelter eating Iams puppy smart. The vet recommended Purina and gave us a free bag, I think the vet may have some sort of deal with them. Recently a groomer recommended Nutri Source-does anyone use this brand? I am overwhelmed and confused over the number of foods out there. How do you know which one is the best and which one is the correct one for your dog. I have read the thread on the dog food grading and I want to give my dog the best I can but I am not sure what that is. Thanks for any advice.

I feel your pain. There are so many different types of food. I had a thread going and someone posted the grade. It was helpful but a little confusing. Some of the same brands had completely different grades. ie. puppy/adult food of same brand. I was on purina and switched to Nutro Max. I know it wasn't A's in all brands, but it was good on the list. I know a lot of people have responded and use Candidae? question spelling...my pet store doesn't have a great variety, so I had to go with what was available. I do know my puppy LOVES the food. I switched my cats as well. They really like that brand. The Vet said it was 10 times better than the purina puppy chow he was on. I know I wasn't much help. Just know you are not alone. Please post what you decide to go with..Thanks
You're going to get a flood of people's opinions. I would suggest taking the formula for grading the food and spending some time in the pet food store reading bags to make your own decision. I use Nutro Natural Choice, it's an A (95%)on the list. Not the best but I'm happy with it. He's a senior so this includes glucosamine chondroitin for his joints and it's also really improving his coat. Max is not fond of the taste of anything that's good for him so I have to use a little IAMS gravy or something else to entice him to eat. Canidae is a wonderful product but a lot of stores don't carry it. Purina has a very good record for testing their food batches so they are safe. But the ingredients are not the best and it's basically a junk food diet for your pet. As you can see from your vet saying one thing, your groomer another and the shelter providing yet another, everybody has their own reason their opinion is best.
I use the Van Patten's Natural Balance Potatoe and Duck. My pug/beagle mix has allergies and this is what has worked best for him. He used to get constant ear infections and on the P&D he hasn't gotten any and his ears are clean.
Been raising dogs over 45 yrs. I can only tell you what works for me. I forget about the brand and pretend they are all "brown bags". I look first at protein and fat content. If my dog gets too fat, I want to cut back on the protein/fat intake. If they lose weight, I want to raise that intake. If they continue to lose wt, I take them to the vet. Next I look at ingredients. Don't want them eating disgusting items or a lot of non food items. Now that Ifeel I have made a good choice, here comes the ultimate choice. I get a small bag and try it on them. If they don't like it, it isn't a good choice regardless of the other criteria. If it is nutritionally sound and they like it, you can't go wrong. If your dog doesn't like the food, it doesn't matter how good the food is for your dog. Two brands may have the exact ingredients and food value, but taste very different to your pet. Some pets arepicky and others will inhale everything you put in their bowl. Let's face facts. They don't usually eat the name on the bag. If you have trouble with ingredients or protein/fat ratios, talk to the farmers co op or the local feed store, or a vet. They can help with making those decisions. I use two different brands and two different food values. I use one for maintenance of the adults and another for puppies and mothers. I start mothers on the higher grade one week before whelping. That's the program I use, and it has worked well for several decades. How do I know it works? All the dogs love feeding time, they love me, my vet says they are in good health, last but not least, Blow up the pic at left and examine closely. He looks like he spends 10 hours a day in the gym!Yes, I love thedogs as much as they love me. Hope the info helps. Good luck with your search for the right choice for your dog.
Quality is not expensive, it's priceless. I love blues!
Thank you all for your advice. After a week of research and asking everyone in sight I decided to try Innova puppy. I am working on making the switch now and so far so good. My dog seems to like it and I am feeling much better knowing that she is eating something good for her. Thanks again for all your help.
