Not necessary unless there is an issue of really cold weather, especially for a short-haired dog. Other than that, whether to do it or not is just personal preference. Some people have a lot of fun with it, and it doesn't hurt anything. I mean clearly you wouldn't want to put a big heavy down jacket on them in 90 degree weather, but temperature appropriate clothing isn't harmful. I have a friend who makes clothing for her chi. People liked her stuff so well that she makes some to sell now too!

i just do it in the winter when we go for works because my dog is little. he also doesnt mind it and loves his jacket. in the summer i wouldnt bother its hot out and they already got a coat on. oh and holloween lol i like to find him an cute out fit and he hands out candy with me.
I bought my dog a college sweatshirt because it was cute and when it's really cold he does need a little extra protection. Otherwise people keep buying me dog clothes so I just put it on them and take a quick picture. They don't mind it. If they want to waste their money, thats ok
I dress up our crew & fosters on holidays and for events. I love to show off my bebes and I think/hope they like it too! Plus for my fosters I notice that when I dress them up and place them on petfinder they are usually adopted within that week!

My dogs love to dress up! We live in Ottawa and it gets cold in the winter, they are small dogs and need their coats and boots. In the summer I use t-shirts and soak them in cool water and it allows them to stay fresh.
They also love to wear t-shirts around the house.
Both my boys have a tuxedo and sunglasses for Special Occassions.
