i stopped my dogs tie, is there a chance she can still be pregnant?

Trust me this isnt what i wanted to happen. My female is a maltese and is 2 years old. I have a 6 month old male maltese. They tied yesterday, I dumped cold water on them and the tied ended but did this help for her not to be pregnant?
I thought i read some where that if she was pregnant then she wouldnt let him mount her again, is this true?
But if she allows him to mount her then she isnt pregnant?
I dont want puppies, and guess i should of done something more then nothing, to prevent this and i could just shoot myself for not knowing that this could happen with chance being so young- never in a million years did i think this could happen.
How do i know if she is pregnant? or if she isnt. If i didnt let the tied finish on its own did i prevent a pregnancy ?
Gosh, im so upset with myself... Please if any one has any help for me i sure would like to hear from you, please dont bash me, im already doing that myself.

Yes, there still is a chance that she could be pregnant. Any dog, any age can produce puppies and even if the tie was broken, there is still a chance - puppies have been conceived with no tie.
If you do not want this litter, there is always the vet. S/he would be able to tell if there is a conception and would be able to take care of that for you.
I won't bash you for not taking precautions because I do believe that this was an accident. People learn from mistakes...

When dogs are tied they are literally stuck. The tie ended because it was finished. Dumping cold water on them does nothing but make the dogs very uncomfortable. Wishing and wanting to avoid a pregnancy while owning two intact dogs that can get to each other has proven over and over to be the worst method of preventing it. Dogs tie repeatedly whether the female is pregnant or not until she is no longer in heat. The safest thing to do is spay the female as soon as she is out of heat and the vet says it is safe.

Sunnydays, most breeders (except Windy) have had an oops.
Don't beat your self up over it, a 6 month male is a tad early, but of course it does happen. Take your bitch to the vet and ask him about the mismatch shot. It has to be given within a week of the tie.

Yes, in case I came off as too harsh I'll admit to an oops litter too. It is just that the op seems to have been getting some incorrect information. If the tie didn't take and the dogs are allowed back together you can be sure they will do it again and the dog will end up pregnant. We had a dog go through a solid wood door to get my female.

It is pretty unlikely that she will get pregnant from a 6 month old dog. They basically shoot "blanks," if any until they are 1 year old. And unless your female is in heat she cannot get pregnant. The only way you can tell if she is pregnant is waiting 1 month and then do an xray to see if there are any pups. that's about it. There are no pregnancy tests for dogs. you need to have one, the other, or both dogs spayed (even if she is pregnant they can do it) and neutered. you can neuter the pup now, he is old enough. Not true that 6 month old shoot blanks. They are ver possibly fertile.
Onemonth i nt long enough to tell if she is pregnant by xray. Xray do not show signs until the last approximately 10 days of the pregnancy when the pups start to form skeleton.
It is very likelyshe is pregnant. Dogs can become pregnant with no tie and only entry.
Keep them seperate completely from this point on for one
Call your vet Monday and make th choice if you want to have this litter, get her spayed now, or ask about the mis-mate shot (though I thought the time frame on those were 24 or 48 hours...not one week??)
Some vetsare able to do a blood test in about a week after conception to tell if she took.
As long as she is in heat, they will continue to tie whether she is pregnant from that tie or not.

My suggestion is to get her spayed asap and him neutered as well.
There are side effects with the mismate shot and to me that would make a spay a better option... that is if you are not showing or planning to breed. It will make your life much easier.

I just want to add in response to something that was posted:
Actually most breeders do not have oooops litters. This is mainly because they are extremely careful with their dogs. Of course even with the best precautions sometimes things can happen, but it is not common.

Things like posted by arachyd1 where the dog broke through the door would be a true ooops breeding and not the owners fault.

When mistakes happen due to someone being irresponsible that is a total different story in my opinion

Sorry I got here too late to give you this bit of advise. I have been told by an old time breeder that if you give the female a vinegar and water douche within 24 hours of the tie, that it can greatly reduce the chance of conception. I am certain this should work, because when doing an AI it is very important not to have water on any of the equipment used because water will kill canine sperm. Since I have personally never had a oops breeding, I have not tried the method myself, but this breeder swears it has worked for him.

Yes, your 6 month old definitely can get a bitch pregnant. I agree with the suggestion to have her spayed immediately. Though I am wondering if you had truly planned to spay her. She is already 2 years old and you did not say you never planned to breed her. Unless I did not read it correctly. My pet pups are on a strict spay/neuter agreement which must be done before the female's first season. It 100% avoids such accidents.

I suggest the mis-mate shot. And I suggest it be done today. Better she have some cramping than an unplanned pregnancy with all the risk that can entail. Then at least neuter your little man immediately. Unless you never planned to neuter him.

It always feels weird offering "advice" when you do not know the people or their true intentions. But if your main question is over the possibility of pregnancy, then YES.

The mis-mate shot, I do believe, the side effects are unterine infection (due to keeping the cervix dilated to expel any attached eggs) and infertility, which may be a positive side effect here.

If the intention to breed was never there, rather than risk infection, have her spayed and get it over with to avoid this in the future.

Like the last poster said...hard to tell the intentions of the OP, so hard to give advice without upsetting them.

Thank you for the advice, I just got chance (the male) a few weeks before this happened, So, No i had really no reason to have Lola spayed due to her being the only dog. I honestly didnt think that my pup could/would beable to pregnate my female being so young,
I never thought about it, i guess not having to worry about it before and no i didnt plan on breeding my female at all.
And when i got my male i did know i would have to have her spayed but thought with him being so young i had time.
I was all wrong-

Yes, they are apart now, and they were tied together and i thought with me pouring water between them that i stopped the tie as she was draggin him around when they were connected (i was in the shower when this happend) i heard my pup crying and i hurried up and got out to see what was going on. Very shocked and surprised this was happening.
I had no idea what to do , but i heard ppl would use a garden hose to spray dogs when they were tied so i thought cold water...
I do let them play together now but only with me watching every moment they are together and i also have dog underwear on her that do cover her private parts and i know it isnt 100% full proof but still it helps to keep horny puppy off her- lol
My intentions werent at all to have a liter but i guess if it happened it happend and i guess i learn from it. IS my female mature enough to care for puppies being only 2?
she has had 3 heats cycles and yes is in heat when this happened.
first time dog owner i guess i really should of taken precautions, but didnt know this could happen with him being so young- and yes she will be spayed and him neutered once i find out whats going on. So a vet cant tell me shes pregnant for a month?

The main reason you want to wait until your vet says it is ok to spay is that while she is in heat there is a lot of increased blood flow in the area that would require surgery. That makes it a higher risk surgery than if you wait till after she isn't in heat. It isn't impossible to spay her now, just not as safe. Spaying is best and safest because of all the problems associated with the mismate shot (google pyometra) and why put the dog through that if you will later spay the dog anyway? Whatever you do I wish you and your dogs well. If you decide to keep the pups please start a crash course of learning all you can about whelping, raising pups, weaning, vaccinations, worming, screening prospective new owners and possible veterinary emergencies because it is no easy job.

The mismate shot does not cause Pyometra. In case I read what you wrote incorrectly, I want to clear that up. Pyometra is a deadly infection that can quickly start up during a female's heat cycle. ANY intact female. And it can kill them quickly. Sometimes you get symptoms with an open Pyo, sometimes you get no symptoms with a closed Pyo.

I almost lost one of my Champion girls to closed Pyometra. I know of folks that have lost their females to Pyo. Nothing to fool around with :(

I also know people that have had their girls die during whelp or right after whelp. Handraising a new litter while being guilt ridden over the loss of your beloved female is almost unbearable. It is with this in mind I concurred on the suggestion of the mismate shot. Much safer than whelping a litter and bringing more unplanned puppies into the mix.

If the breeding was 1 month ago, then all of this is pretty late to even discuss. (Did I now read that right?) Make sure you have your vet on call 24/7 for an emergency C-section and any other needs. If they refuse to be on call for you, get the location and phone # for the nearest emergency vet office. Do a crash course in whelping a litter and see if your vet can't spend time with you now to help you lear more. Pay them for their time if need be. It will be invaluable. Some new doggy mothers are better than others. That is why they have us there to help them :)

Another thing to keep in mind, is the weight of your female. A Maltese, to standard, is under 7-pounds.

Since your male is so young, you don't yet know his adult weight. A poorly bred Maltese can have an adult weight of over 10-pounds.

In other words, if you have a 4-pound female, it's dangerous enough to breed her, much less with a 10-pound male.

Pawprint, I don't know where you got that information. There is a lot of research indicating that the abortion of pups using one of the mismate type drugs is linked to pyometra.

I read your passage. It states mismate shots carry Pyometra risk during Diestrus which is 4-8 weeks after estrus. My advice was based on what I believed was an accidental breeding that had just happened. As in a day or 2. Of course how far along in the heat cycle would factor into this. But it is normal for my girls to stand for a breeding at 10 days in. Quite a bit before diestrus.

I am now unclear how far along this really is since folks are not saying 4 weeks or so. I am glad you shared the link though - Thanks ! I really did learn alot by reading it. I did alot of research on Pyo when my contracted it and a close friend's bitch died of it. Not to mention the concept it is only a risk in old bitches is something that is not completely true. A friend's bitch had open Pyo on her first heat.

Op posted on the 15th that the tie was the day before.
So the female if pregnant is only 4 days along.

Ibelieve her referene to the 'one month' was in asking if that is the soonest a vet can confirm the pregnancy.
My memory fails me as to how soon a blood test for pregnancy can be done, since my vet doesnt do them.
Xrays need to wait to be done until near the end of the pregnancy (7-10 days prior to the due date).

I am unsure though on the blood test.....anyone?

We do not have the blood test available in my area, though I would like it to be at some point. Considering my few breedings are very much planned, I would enjoy knowing a bit earlier if they took. My repro specialist will sonogram halfway through to determine pregnancy.

Mine doesnt either. If my memory doesnt fail me I believe she had they test at 20 days to confirm.....that would be nice!
