My "Big D" (his name is Dawson) is an 8 year old black Lab. He weighs in at about 117 lbs. He swims every day in the summer. (we live in Michigan). Lately he has been whinning about getting up and sometimes really screaming about it. Also he looses alot of hair during certain seasons. His vet has given him steroids and now tells me to just give him Benadryl. I have been told he is a "Boxhead" Lab. He was given to me at age 6 months because the owners were moving. He is as AWESOME dog and everyone loves him. We would love to get another big lab, but am not quite sure where to look for a "Boxhead". Also money could be an issue. We have lots of land to run on and give quality food, including venison. Thank you for your time. Lisa and Family
When you bought him, did you ask for an O.F.A certification for the parents?I'd take him straight to the vet and have his hips looked at. Never buy a Lab without all testing done. I would also try and get a bit of weight off him, it won't be helping whatever is wrong with him.
Hi kickazmom It sounds to me like your lab is an "English" lab. Although I'm not sure if there is an official AKC difference; My yellow lab (that I had for 12 years that passed last xmas) was described as an English lab. They have a more box-shaped head and shorter muzzle than other labs which have a more narrow head and longer muzzle. Some breeders recognize this difference and will note it in the description of their pups or when describing the parents. I don't believe there is a difference in temperament or intelligence, it's just owner preference. Just about any lab you get will be a great dog. I hope this helps.
I have ENGLISH boxhead black lab his Name is Sarge & he weighs 122 lbs ! HE'S BIG & Beautiful,! He is my Best BUDDY! SARGE JUST turned 3 last week, He sleeps with his sister a pekeinese that wt 13 lbs. they are never apart.& he adores her! sARGE WAS GIVEN TO ME BY a co-worker who breeds english box head labs. He has 9 chocolate & black labs that has just been born(approx 1 wk ago) the mom & dad are registered & Hip checked & VET CHECKED @UT in knoxville. HIs Labs are beautifus & well behaved. If anybody wants address just email me.PS Sarge is on a diet! It's not easy
I have to agree with Pen on the OFA testing. It does sound like you boy may have some arthritis or hip dysplasia. I would take him to the vet and see what they can do about it. Not only is HD common in Labs, but breeding for a dog larger than what the standard calls for, increases the risk.
Can anyone suggest a good diet for Sarge? I have him on low carb,2 cups & Green beans this is what the vet suggested.but he is a big ole piggy . Is their any other diet for him . He needs to loose 20 lbs or more
