I am asking for a friend. Their Bichon (not yet 2) constantly yaps and carries on running all amuck while they try to sit and eat at the table. It's not necessarily that the dog is begging for food. She wants her Mommy's attention. What should they do? Crate her? Ignore her? They have tried with the NO command and a spray bottle of water which has not worked. THe dog only does this while at their home. If they take her visiting, she will go lay down and behave while they eat. Anyone out their have any advice? Thanks.
I don't know if your friend has their dog on a feeding schedule or not, but it's best if they do. If possible, feed the dog at the same time every day. Also it't best to do it before your friends eat their own meal. They should make the dog "earn" its meal with basic commands such as sit, stay before putting the dog dish down for him to eat. Then using the same basic command, put the dog in an area away from the table and make him sit, stay. Also it goes without saying, never feed the dog food from the table during the meal. The dog sounds like he's dominating the family instead of the other way around. This is a minor behavioral issue compared to some. But if the dog continues to dominate in this situation, he just may start taking more liberties in areas that are more severe. If the dog is still a pup, it will be easier to start with some basic training in these areas. Key is being consistant in their regime and to make the dog earn its meals and rewards.
i have tried the spray bottle with my puppy when it begged for food or peed in the house and he just tried drinking it lol.. so that didnt work when me and my boyfriends dog is jumping on us trying to get food my boyfriend just uses his scary deep voice and he listens. then aftre we give him a treat and say good boy and after a while he got the hint.
Every pet owner should have a library of quality training books, and read them. It would save time. The longer an animal is allowed to display inappropriate behavior, the harder it is to stop. Most questions about behavior are addressed in training manuals. If people read the books, they would have an edge when inappropriate behaviors show up. There are several books out there and very affordable. I'm thinking of writing one myself. lol
Quality is not expensive, it's priceless. I love blues!
