Yesterday, though it makes a dent in the pocket-book, a got a brand new $499.99 "Animal" vacuum that deals specifically with animal hair... and it works GREAT! With a shedding black/&/white dog, a heavily shedding white kitten and an indifferent gray and white cat, having this vacuum makes a world of difference. It's already smelling much better in the house, and you would not believe how much hair ended up in the "tank" after just vacuuming the day before with an (ahem, 10 year old vacuum). I highly recommend it for you folks with pets!
I might have the same vacuum cleaner, JerryLewis. I was completely taken in by the snobby British dude in the commercial. What a huge difference it made. Mine is purple, and I think there's an even stronger one that isn't. I had to empty out the cannister 3 times the first day I used the thing, and the house did smell a lot better right away. I wish I'd had it back when I had a white cat. That stuff was all over everything.
Enjoy!! It's the most wonderful tool for people with pets! It's awesome on those "fur explosions" discussed in another thread. And the little flat head attachment with the strip of red velvety stuff is fabulous on microfiber sofas and carpeted stairs! I probably would have stopped at one cat if it weren't for my Animal invented by the "snobby British dude". The only part that is gross is if the fur gets stuck in the tank and you have to reach in to get it out. I use a paint stirring stick that I keep in the garage for just that reason. It usually only happens if I suck up a toy by mistake. Now if I could just figure out how to make the cats sit still and let me use it on them.....
they have one of those at my work (assited living) and I can not figure out how to use the attatchments. I don't really like it either, but then again Im not vaccuming up pet hair at an assisted living. I guess my $50 vacuum works well enough for me.I like that pet hair releasing powder (most likely scented baking soda) for carpet.
Have had mine just about a year. Got is on sale at Kohls with an extra 15% off, it ran 279. Its called the Dyson Animal and its fantasic. It's PURPLE.
The only complaint I have is the attachments are not, in my case, easy to use. I find taking the handle apart to connect the attachment a little hard and there is no extra rod, so I can't reach high enough so I use a mop on the ceilings.
The first day I had it, I thought great, vaccuumed everwhere and me that thought I was such a decent housekeeper emptied the container 3 times in the time to took me to do six rooms. With the allergies I have the Dyson helps tremendously. It truly cleans better than anythign I have ever seen. Rocky's is going throught the blow coat process right now and I swear I almost fill the repository every day. Great product!!
I must admit, I haven't tried a Dyson, but here's my theory...
According to Consumer Reports, Dyson is NOT the best brand out there! In fact, it's not even in the top 10! I think Dyson just has great advertising. When you think about it, ANY time you buy a new vacuum (even if it's the cheapest one out there) chances are, it's going to work better than the 10 or 20 year old vacuum that you are replacing.
A better test would be to try a Dyson, AND a different NEW model at the same time-not a Dyson and an old broken down worn out vacuum! I think that because they advertise it as a "pet" vacuum, (plus-it's expensive) people think it has to be the best thing around.
Personally, I tend to go by Consumer Reports. If I can buy a vacuum they say is much better, and it's HALF the price-I'm going to save my money and go for a brand that doesn't spend all it's money on advertising and then pass that cost on to the consumer, IMHO.
The average dog is a nicer person than the average person.
