I have a 8 week old kitten that is just so naughty.
I try to train him by telling no or just spank him on his back but this just dont help.
He doesnt respond to anything....just go on with what ever he was up to.

How can i train my cat in a different way that will help????

Water squirt bottle or squirt gun. Gives you long term distance shooting capability. Kittens are just mischievous though, into stuff, climbing on things, etc.

Loud noises are good for distracting them also, like shaking a sode can with change in it.
Also, make sure he has lots of things that he is allowed to play with, and stuff that he is allowed to scratch. A big flat piece of cardboard makes a great scratching area.

He's a baby. 8 weeks old. Don't expect miracles out of him. Patience.

Thanks for the great replies!
Firstly i know he is a baby and needs to play, but there is a difference between playing and things he shouldnt do! Like jumping on the table and eating our food though he has a big bowl of food himself, some yummy food i can tell you!!
And peeing on the sofa or bed, though he always uses he's litter box.
And he has a lot of things to play with: a big scratching post, a mouse and a little type of dragon with a spring that he can pull.
As well a mirror to play with himself (he he).
He has a big litter box which i clean everyday and a little blanket he pulls around.

How does he know that he's not supposed to do those things? Do you think that they are born with that knowledge?

Really, there is NO EXCUSE for hitting your pet. Especially a young pet. It's you that needs the discipline here. You need to learn patience and understanding. Perhaps you should spend time learning how to train your cat rather than hitting him.

You've gotten some good advice here, cheap too, spray bottles and rattling a can with small dry beans in it work wonders on curbing behavior.
Love your pets. Have them spayed or neutered.

NEVER EVER hit your animal!!!! Those who hit pets need serious pshychological evaluation! If you hit a cat or dog, you don't deserve to have one!

No need to spank, you are much bigger and could seriously injure the little guy by accident. I have a baby that's just getting out of kitten phase(though still a bad boy!) and it can be frustrating! I use a water bottle and it really works! After awhile,when he does something bad,you wont even need to squirt him with it. Just pointing it at him will be enough! Harmless but effective! Good luck.

Kitty08, I think I know what you mean, and I'm sure it's not a severe beating you're laying on this cat. I've given one of mine a swat when it was up on the kitchen counter. By no means should this be the training method of choice, as I'm sure you know. All the other suggestions work very well, especially the water bottle. Another thing to remember is that little kittens can be a huge handful.
Yes, Kitty you definitely need PSHYCHOLOGICAL help.

I agree that "spanking" should not be used as a training method, but I will be the first to tell you that my kitties get swatted once in a while. Sorry guys, but for those of you say you should never hit your pet, I mean REALLY! How do you think momma cat teaches her babies right from wrong???? Mine get a LIGHT swat on top of the head or in the face accompanied by a hissing sound for jumping up on the table while we are eating. Well actually they USED to get that because neither has done it in a while. Adding the hissing sound seems to make it much more effective. It gets the point across that "momma doesn't want you to do that" Squirt bottles also work GREAT, especially for scratching issues. The important thing is to create a negative association with the undesireable action without actually hurting the animal.

all you teach an animal by "swatting" or "spanking" it is to associate negatively with your HAND. your cat knows you are not its mother and that you are not a cat. you aren't teaching the animal anything except that You are unpredictable and will smack them in the face randomly.

Yeah, and that is exactly why my cats are still increadibly affectionate toward me and don't shy away from my hand. I've been raising cats a long time and I've always had well behaved and affectionate kitties. I'm just saying what what works for me, and I'm sorry but I disagree with you simply because my own experience contradicts your statement. And what makes you so sure that our pets don't think of us as "mom"? How do you know that to them we aren't just really big cats? Even if they don't think we are "mom" they still view us as the alpa in the group. In a cat hierarchy the alpha will swat the others to keep them in line as well. It's not like I beat my cats. I completely agree that beating cats is completely wrong. But I see nothing wrong with a light swat to remind them to mind their manners.

Ok, I have a ton of cats. I have never seen my alpha cat swat anyone. All he has to do is give an insubordinant cat "that look" and the cat will slink away.

Same thing with alpha dogs. So many people think an alpha dog fights other dogs. Rarely the case. The alpha doesn't HAVE to fight to prove anything. It's the alpha "wanna be's" that will generally start fights and be more aggressive.
The average dog is a nicer person than the average person.

well- if you need to continue "swatting" your cats, they obviously don't understand the message behind it. No your cats do not think you are cat- sorry. You don't look like a cat, smell like a cat, or act like one... unless you are using the litterbox too? They understand that you are the big animal that provides them the things they need, gives them affection, and randomly swats at them.

Did you all not read the part where I said I USE to swat them for getting on the table while we eat? They don't do it anymore because they know It is not acceptable behavior. And like I said, it is not like I am beating them. They got a LIGHT tap on the head or in the face that was more to push them off or down from the table than anything. Thats all. It was unpleasant, not painful. Cats understand physical cues. Yes, alpha cats will swat other cats, until the other cats learn that "that look" is all it takes, because if they dont get in line from that, they will get swatted.

Okay, litterally cats don't think of us as cats, I do agree with you there. They know we are another animal. But they think of us as a parental figure in the same sense that we think of them as our "children" or "fur-babies" as I like to call them.

And I am not saying, by any means, that I think everyone should swat their cats. To each thier own. It works for me for the two I have now. When I was fostering abused and feral cats I would never have swatted them because they already did not trust humans. Each cat and owner is different.

I do think the idea of "spanking" a cat is fairly ludacris. I mean really, do you bend them over your knee and the whole works?
