I'm a new shih-tzu owner and have noticed ads for "Imperial" or "mini" shih-tzus. I thought there was only one kind of shih-tzu. Am I wrong? Is there more than one type of shih-tzu or are these advertisers using these terms to make their pups seem better or more attractive? Thanks
There is only 1 kind of shih tzu. Alot of breeder are using special words to make their pups more apealing. It is kind of like a tea cup poodle, there is no such dog. Now having said that, sometimes when a breeders gets smaller then average pups, the words make them sound cute. Just enjoy your baby, and if you want, you can make up another word to make one of a kind. Yours
Some breeders of shih tzu's do breed smaller sized shih tzu's, and call them teacup, or imperial.. but these puppies parents usually were runts or the smaller shih tzu's from litters, and they just continue to breed them due to their small size.
However, most of these puppies end up with many health issues due to their size.
the CKC (Canadian Kennel Club) standards for a shih tzu size is:
Size The Shih Tzu is not a toy dog. This is a smaller type of dog with good bone and substance. Height at withers approximately 9 to 10-1/2 inches (23 - 27 cm). Breed type and balance always to be main consideration.
