Question, my 2yr old pom cant seem to socialize.. i have only had her for 2 months now, and is finally getting used to me now. But she does not bark nor try to play with others or dogs..I cant even find a toy that she likes! other than taking her to pet training class does anyone have advice for me?? thanks!
Just continue letting her have play sessions with other smaller dogs, just in case she gets really scared, and stepped on by a large breed. Keep throwing the toys, sqeaking them, and stuffing the tiny kong with peanut butter. You really can't force a dog to play. There are many factors to consider, such as genetics, what conditions the puppy was raised in, health, breed, to an extent, and socialization. I would'nt worry about it, unless she seems sick. I just read that she is 2 years old, and you've had her for 2 months. Do you know who had her before you did? Also, as a full grown dog, she may or may not like to play.
Where did you get her from? My maltese is the exact same way. I adopted him from my local humane society when he was approximately one year old. I know he wasn't socialized and I believe he was abused. I've had him 8 yrs and he does play with other dogs now, but his only interest in toys is to keep them away from other dogs.
I adopted a rescued pom. (She was two at the time of adoption from a shelter and was a member of our family for fifteen wonderful years.)
She, too, did not "get" toys or play with other dogs. She had her own type of play with us, which we came to accept and build upon. There had been abuse in her background, and therefore, had never learned the value of "play" and "toys" didn't make sense to her.
Also, there are "breeding dogs" and because they are meant for breeding, they are not socialized in the manner of playing.
Just let her be her...and continue to keep your eye and hearts open to what sparks her interests. It is hard, though, isn't it, to want to play (and bond) with a dog who just looks at you as if to say, "Uh. Whattaya doin'?"
